Report: RadioShack to close all stores, sell half to Sprint

Radio Shack has been selling communication equipment since 1921, but according to Bloomberg, the retail chain will not be celebrating a 100th birthday. As part of a bankruptcy deal, RadioShack Corp. will be shutting down their entire chain of 7,000 tech stores, half of which will be reportedly sold to Sprint. According to the report, RadioShack locations that are sold to Sprint would operate under the wireless carrier’s name, meaning RadioShack would cease to exist as a stand-alone retailer. RadioShack received a rescue financing package from Standard General LP in October, and the hedge fund would serve as the lead bidder in a filing and provide debtor-in-possession financing after filing, said the people. That would allow the investment firm to recoup some of the costs of the $535 million loan. Liquidating the stores also would let RadioShack avoid a battle with lenders over control of the company.

Why does Radio Shack ask for your phone number when you buy batteries?

Lots of retailers do this. They give various reasons for why they do it, but purchase tracking and advertising are probably why. When any retailer asks for my phone number, I just say, "No, thanks. You can just skip that," and they're fine with it.

Get the 9V battery. They are the best value.

That reminds me. I’d better run down there and pick up some fuses for my speakers while they’re still open.

I'm to blame. I always got the free 9-volt rather than the cheaper C, D or even AA. Why did I have to get greedy?

I thought that they gave away flashlights in order to sell batteries?

I used to get stuff there. Now I make a few clicks and UPS brings it to my door.

Hobby electronics is at an all-time high. I’m seeing Arduinos, Raspberry Pi’s, and assorted robotics kits showing up everyplace.

And Radio Shack missed the boat entirely.

Still, Tandy Leather has been operating fine, since Radio Shack sold the name. I’d not be at all surprised if we don’t see RS storefronts, opening up again, after someone buys the rights to the name.

Used to ask for address for small cash purchases—so you’d get on their mailing list. (At one point said mailing list had a feature where the president of the company would write about stuff, and the name was a spoof of an FDR
habit: “Flyer-Side Chat”)

Fry’s is not “the new” anything; they’ve been around for aeons. Fry’s is certainly not Radio Shack. Fry’s has 31 locations (I just checked), the majority in California. Radio Shack was everywhere. Microcenter (26 locations. I just checked.) isn’t Radio Shack, either.

I had one of those TRS-80 color computers. 16MB of ram!!!

They made a strategic mistake. They tried to keep control of hardware and software development.

The PC was open to developers and left Radio Shack in the dust.
