Sony has pulled the plug on the XMAS release of "The Interview," after a number of theater chains bailed.
Sony execs felt their out was if distributors yanked the film because of safety concerns. That would give Sony an out without directly bending to the hackers. Sony just released a statement, saying, "In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release."
The statement goes on, saying, "We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public."
The execs are underscoring the distinction between pulling the film because of the distributors rather than out of fear, saying, "We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."
I see Matt and Trey incorporating this into a South Park episode very soon.
You give one example and it was actually released after a minor fix. I’ve never heard of a movie getting pulled the way this one has.
This isn’t an idiotic group. This is Kim’s people telling Sony to back off or else.
I don’t care. They probably wouldn’t have done anything. It is a threat. Why don’t we just go in and kill him. We can do it easily. Let’s get this Korean War over once and for all. I was stationed their 3 years and anytime North Korea says “boo” everyone goes behind the curtain to hide. It is ridiculous. Let’s just do it and be done.
Way to go cowards.
(Not that I care one bit about a movie I'll never see)
I suspect they'll lay low for a while. If the bigwigs at Sony are worried, a couple of scriptwriters aren't gonna stake their lives on a few throwaway lines. Ultimately, Team America was written and produced during an era in which a North Korean terror attack would have been a gift-wrapped invitation for Bush to move South Korea's northern border to the Yalu River, and Kim Jong-il knew it. Kim Jong-un probably believes Obama's reaction to the assassinations of key Hollywood players that falls short of a mass casualty attack would be noncommittal. And Kim's likely to be right.
I guess these cowards should go back to bashing Christianity... significantly safer.
I’m not dismissing the Norks as incompetents. But I also don’t give a damn about any attacks they target at Hollywood or the stoner idiots that are involved in this film. The Hollywood libs have been spitting in my face for years, trashing every single thing I value and cherish. I wouldn’t lift a finger to help those bastards. If Kim sent out assassination squads to off every one of those degenerate Hollywood bigwigs, I wouldn’t shed a tear.
Oh, and they both have a smile on their face.
Imho...

I say today is great and glorious day for these men called Liberals!
How they show what they are made of! Strong cheese!
First the great hero and leader in White House - he caves like wet cardboard shoebox to the bearded one, Fidel Castro. He could not even wait for Castro to die, and now Castro will die happy man. Castro gets up from his deathbed today and smokes a cigar with cha cha cha and spits on puny weakling girl called 0bama.
And then, as if that were not too much, then the great Hollywood leaders, they throw away their movie like it was a big pile of poop. And why? Because mean fat boy in Korea told them the was going to take away their lunch money. And you know what? He did!
Be proud Liberals - today is special day to remember always - the day America gives in to two communist dictators on same day!
I only think what President Reagan would say today.
I go have vodka now.
I don’t know why, but I keep feeling this is all one big PR stunt. Hackers threatening . . . what, a movie studio? Wow, they’re really saving the world (/sarc).
“I feer sirry (but not reery)”
We lost when we stopped calling it “Red China”...
I find the silence from the White House and the FBI bizarre.
I don’t think that north Korea has the power to do very much as far as terrorism in the united states all they can do is threaten . I think that sonny and the theaters are using threat of violence as a pretext to stop the movies.....all that North Korea need for the hacking is a expensive computer and computing tools and a few good hackers
Its theater chains that are chickening out
A U.S. program that backstops insurance companies’ losses from acts of terrorism is set to end after the Senate adjourned without extending it.
This is indeed a historical milestone.
I think safe to say Hollywood is not run by moguls like LB Mayor Harry Cohn Warner bros or Adolf Zucker of Parmount picture
It run by bunch of mama skirt metrosexuals can you imagine if they try this in 1980s I doubt Reagan would bend over
I think Ronnie would put his 14 inch Cowboy boot up this North Korea leader a**
NO Ronnie wouldn’t pull with this s***
Also some of moguls were still alive in 1980s
land of the brave, pfftt what ever happened?
