Statement from Greenpeace US Executive Director, Annie Leonard, on Nazca Lines Situation
Greenpeace ^ | December 12, 2014 | Annie Leonard

Posted on 12/15/2014 9:31:37 AM PST by bardettespy

I am deeply disappointed that Greenpeace engaged in an action at the sacred Nazca Lines in Peru.

We have been hearing from many of you and I share your frustration and anger about this situation.

The decision to engage in this activity shows a complete disregard for the culture of Peru and the importance of protecting sacred sites everywhere. There is no apology sufficient enough to make up for this serious lack of judgment.

I know my international colleagues who engaged in this activity did not do so with malice, but that doesn’t mitigate the result. It is a shame that all of Greenpeace must now bear.

For many years Greenpeace US has been making a concerted effort to reach out to and collaborate with diverse constituencies, many of whom share different cultures, values and priorities. We know it’s important for us to be a strong ally who can learn from the leadership of our partners and ensure the work we do reflects and supports all communities.

The Nazca Lines situation has undermined the trust of many allies and supporters that we have been working so hard to build.

As Executive Director of Greenpeace US I assure you that our organization will do everything possible to ensure nothing like this ever happens again and that we will strive to protect the planet in the most respectful, effective and collaborative way possible. I know it will take time and substantial effort to rebuild the trust we have lost, and I am committed to doing that. I am also committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable and that we put safeguards in place to ensure that nothing like this happens ever again.

None of these words justifies the pain and anger so many of you are feeling. The next time you hear from me, we will be a better and more respectful Greenpeace.

In light of the financial mismanagement scandal and increasing criminal prosecutions against Greenpeace activists across the globe, could this ambitious American be plotting a coup d'etat in Greenpeace-land?

A thousand years from now, in the Year 3014, people will marvel at the Nazca Lines, and look at the dramatic straight lines of the Hummingbird, along with the strange, out of place curved path leading up to it, which was made by environmental protesters back in 2014. What will they say about the people who lived in our time?

They should have let Gruber apologize.

So, you have turned over their names to the Peruvian police then?

A decent question to ask in this case; “Who planned this?” The ones who did the deed are obvious but did they do it on their own volition? These banners were designed and sized exactly for these conditions and place. If it was somebody currently beyond Peru’s borders, I’d want that person to voluntarily repatriate themselves to Peru to “Face the Music!” There is a tale that wags this dog and everybody concerned should take appropriate responsibility.

Unless Annie Leonard is posting this statement from a Peruvian police station, where she is taking a break from reviewing video tape and naming names, I would think she is not all that committed to ensuring...

Add this up. This required four Greenpeace idiots to fly in (figure $9k for round-trip tickets), a couple of days in a hotel there ($1500). Meals ($700), and a jeep to get out there ($400 for rental and fuel). Someone had to approve the budget expenditure and allow the money to be spent out of the general fund. Whoever signed the expenditure....needs to be let go.

The next time we hear from you should be your end of trial speech before they haul you and your clan off to your new home.

Otoh, if I wanted to tarnish Greenpeace forever, the Nazca Lines/Greenpeace graffiti would definitely do it.

After seeing their stuff all these years, now watching things turned around on them would be more entertaining if the price for admission wasn't so high.

Instead, I'm just angry with the same sort of anger I had watching the islamic crazies blow up the Buddhas of Bamiyan.

No mea culpa will suffice. This act is clearly and specifically consistent with the Greenpeace agenda.
Certainly they view the so called lines as an abuse of the natural environment.
Greenpeace has never demonstrated any respect for human intervention nor have they in this instance. This act is a clear and specific assault on the human activity that the lines represent.
They have overstepped the line, jumped the shark and otherwise destroyed their political capital. The only appropriate response is to abandon this derelict organization as anathema to civilized culture.
Let them be cursed today, tomorrow and always.

Greenpeace, like their Taliban counterparts have no respect for the accomplishments of previous generations or civilizations. I’m very surprised they didn’t completely tear the place up with 4-wheelers after getting the picture they wanted.

Greenpeace stopped being about “the Earth” back in the ‘70s.

Now they’re just a bunch of Marxist dirtbags.

I put them on par with the idiots that shot the nose off the sphinx. Not as bad as the talaban that blew up the buddahs, who meant to destroy them, but selfish, wanton destruction because they were thinking of their own ends.

Just like we read about the sphinx being damaged by soldiers, we’ll read about the lines being damaged by thoughtless protesters. They’ll be a lesson forevermore. And I bet at least a few of them will really lose sleep over it.
