Male Ebola survivors told: Use a condom

(Reuters) - Sex could keep the Ebola epidemic alive even after the World Health Organization (WHO) declares an area free of the disease, one of the discoverers of the deadly virus said on Tuesday.

The WHO is hoping to announce later this week that Nigeria and Senegal are free of Ebola after 42 days with no infections -- the standard period for declaring an outbreak over, twice the maximum 21-day incubation period of the virus.

However, it appears the disease can last much longer in semen.

"In a convalescent male, the virus can persist in semen for at least 70 days; one study suggests persistence for more than 90 days," the WHO said in an information note on Monday.

After 30 years of undiminished AIDS in Africa, it seems the concept of "Bodily Fluids Spreads Disease" is completely lost on a large percentage of male Africans.

But the CDC swears it cannot so spread,
and there is no latency,
and there are no other carriers,
... and who cares anyway.

" if a cured Ebola patient has Ebola tainted sperm in his system"

I wonder if it can spread sexually before any symptoms show up?

A responsible MAN, yes. But an animal will act on instinct.

If used properly it will reduce transmission of ebola but condoms are not even an especially effective means of preventing pregnancy, which is the purpose for which they were originally designed, so it’s not going to prevent the spread of ebola, just reduce it. The best policy is abstinence. Abstinence works so long as the individual in question actually does remain abstinent.

“Yeh...you tell me you had ebola and I’m gonna have sex with you?? Sure....”

He’s not gonna tell you. And if you ask him he’s gonna lie.

Isn’t that considered “normal” in W Africa?

I once knew a guy who kept a secret wife in his homeland, without his American wife knowing.

val gell has said obola is more intelligent than any of his advisors. This includes the cdc director. What should be done is that obola go to the most infested ebola part of Africa and assess the situation and report back to the American People to ease our fears. obola could take reggie, mooch and their children to help him. obola should stay till this situation is brought under control. Heck, the American People are willing to sacrifice and allow all of the lame-stream media to go with obola, mooch, reggie and their children. The entire trip should take about one year to obtain all the facts. No price is too great to bring about calm and all the facts on the table for the cure.

It’s not sperm - the virus will not enter sperm - it’s the fluid in semen. The transfer of fluids in sex is greater in volume and retained in the body longer than the transfer of fluids in other activities, which means sex will spread Ebola long after other interactions are comparatively safe.

So men who have ‘recovered’ and are not symptomtic can spread the virus, but people who have the virus and are yet not symptomtic can’t.

Do I have this right?

What an ignorant thing to say. The HIV infection rate in the countries affected by ebola is just slightly higher than it is in the United States, despite those countries having much more primitive education and medical systems. There are parts of Africa with severe HIV epidemics - West Africa isn't one of them.

United States HIV infection rate: .6%

Senegal HIV infection rate: .7% (had ebola)

Liberia HIV infection rate: 1% (but has ebola)

Guinea HIV infection rate: 1.4% (but has ebola)

Sierra Leone HIV infection rate: 1.6% (but has ebola)

South Africa HIV infection rate: 17.3% (no ebola)

Botswana HIV infection rate: 23.4% (no ebola)
