The headline seems to be a tad inaccurate. There is no flip but apparently a gradual change.

When it goes a certain distance, it may start to move more quickly. Some have estimated that at some point in its travel, magnetic north may move 53 degrees within one year. The really cool thing is that as the magnetic field moves more quickly, so does the outer core (seismic and volcanic fun for sure). Something else cool... The NOAA not long ago revised quite a bit of previously stored data to show less movement and lack of acceleration. It is accelerating.

I’m sure the cause of this change in the earths magnetic field is global warming and if we just enact a carbon tax all will be safe.
