Madam Secretary, CBS’ 100 million dollar Hillary infomercial, wasn’t doing too well with younger viewers to begin with.
You would think that 60 Minutes with its senescent cast of droners would have less younger viewers than Madam Secretary, but dont count out the Hillary magic.
The current ratings show that Madam Secretary lost 4 million 60 Minutes viewers and lost half of its younger 18-49 viewers. Thats the demo prized by advertisers and Madam Secretary is going to have trouble staying on the air if it cant get them to tune in.
Younger voters are also an obvious target for the Hillary 2016 campaign which is what Madam Secretary is really an ad for. Thats why CBSs version of Hillary Clinton is being played by a woman twenty years younger than her.
When your demographics are older than 60 Minutes, you know your TV show and your campaign are in big trouble.
Now it’s doing even worse with the handful of younger viewers it still hadn’t alienated.
The latest ratings show that Madam Secretary’s 2nd episode is down to a 1.4 rating among the demo, viewers 18-49, down from 2.0.
Up against the premiere of the Simpsons and Once Upon a Time, which had demo ratings of 3.9 and 3.4, Madam Secretary performed as miserably as Hillary did as Secretary of State.
The overall series has lost 2 million viewers with its 2nd episode. That doesn’t look very promising. Its overall ratings aren’t catastrophic yet, but CBS is obsessive about retaining younger viewers. It already does well with older viewers.
Madam Secretary can’t afford to keep losing viewers 18-45 or it’s toast. It’s already drawn down to Good Wife and CSI level ratings in the demo. If it keeps falling beyond that, it hits Blue Bloods territory. Any further and it’s gone.
By way of comparison, Scorpion, CBS’ new drama, pulled in a 3.20 demo. NCIS New Orleans debuted with a 2.50 in the demo.
Robin Williams’ Crazy Ones got the ax after a season finale that pulled in a 1.30 in the demo. Hostages was canceled after dropping below 1.00 in the demo. Intelligence was canceled after a 1.20 in the demo.
Madam Secretary is performing with younger viewers like a show that’s been on the air for five years. At best. And that’s not a good thing.
The question is how much money is CBS willing to lose to promote Hillary Clinton?

Backups overwriting the only good copy of software? Is this the IRS?
Vital backups being saved on a single hard disk? I'm just a lone computer programmer and I "splurged" for a $100 RAID server for my home network.
The plane having the good copy of the same software that was corrupted at the control tower?
No capability of the pilots to switch back to regional flight control when the tower goes out?
No plane-to-plane communications?
No one in the entire Los Angeles area with a freaking radio able to communicate on the ATC channel to those pilots too lazy to change frequencies to find out what is going on?
And the always popular failure to understand the difference between kilowatts and kilowatt-hours. Any script using the word "watt" should be reviewed by the set's chief electrician. You don't need a scientist - just, the guy hooking up lights and microphones would be able to say "No, you got that wrong".
I thought the writing for the second one was just plain awful.
Glad I didn't waste my time on it. I watched the first and culled it from my way too crowded viewing list.
It followed 60 minutes I don’ know if that helps them or not. All during football the east coast runs late on CBS.
I record everything I am interested in and then scan through much of it. Not interested in the Defender of Benghazi glorification. I do like Tia, but I’ll pass on this.
Did the lead actress always sound like Jodie Foster on steroids.
Their plan was for this to be a huge hit and the actress would appear at campaign events with Hillary.
If they had put an old, ugly bitch of an actress in the role and made it more like reality it might have done better.
Does not matter because the goal of the MSM here is to confuse the vast majority of low-info voters and convince them that Tea Leoni’s character IS Hillary.
Just as they convinced them all that Tina Fey was actually Sarah Palin.
Well I decided go back and forth from Cozi TV Fantasy Island to Masterpiece theatre season 2 of Paradise Store show came on the air so I think only watch 15 minutes I got restless switch to Cozi tv then settle on Masterpiece
I be shocked it last once Downton Abbey come back on PBS I am so there LOL!
Reminds me of the old joke about going to KFC and ordering the Hillary Bucket.
Two tiny breasts
Two gigantic thighs
and the rest of the bucket filled with all Left Wings
“At some point CBS shareholders need to demand answers about why their money is being urinated away on programming like this.”
You are EXACTLY right... and yet, shareholders in entertainment companies don’t seem to think this way.
Why does Time Warner keep shows like Bill Maher and “Girls” (with lefty poster girl Lena Dunham) on HBO season after season? They get no numbers at all, and there is no after market in syndication or on pay per view/DVD for a news show like Maher.
The answer is they use these shows to advance an agenda approved by the elite. Keeping money losers on the air in the absence of profit are undeclared campaign donations to the left.
If shareholders would start screaming about underwriting failed shows that advance a political agenda, these public companies would have to respond.
“After football” isn’t a death slot — it’s a coveted launching pad for a new series. You’ve got a zillion viewers already on the couch and tuned in to your station. Your best chance of getting a huge number of people to at least sample the show is after a known hit. Football was the highest rated program in America last year.
If the show is lousy, the slot won’t help... and as you say, delays will depress ratings somewhat. But CBS didn’t place the show there to kill it — they want to give it the best chance possible.
I'm talking about after football/60 Minutes/The Good Wife; not immediately after. I thought it was being shown after The Good Wife, which is the slot of death.
I agree with you about the sloppy details. I think the show could be saved with a few consultants...one of them being a Mensan who functions as a normal person in the real world (yeah, they got the high IQ thing wrong, I thought, too).
You’re right about the second episode of “Madame Secretary” airing after “The Good Wife.”
I was talking about the premiere last week, when they swapped the shows and positioned “Madame Secretary” right after football to capitalize on the huge lead-in.
My point about “death slots” is, there isn’t one on Sunday night on CBS. Football is the highest rated program in America. People aren’t turning TV sets off after the game — they’re turning the channel from CBS because they don’t like the program after the game, or the program after the program after the game.
The time slot isn’t killing the show — the show is killing the time slot.
It still holds true.
Hillary’s achilles heal is that younger women are not at all impressed with her. She reminds them of their grandmother’s...nice lady but not cool.
Therefore, they won’t go to the polls for hillary like they did for Obama or even Bill.
It’s you! Why no freeper pick’em this year? It’s only week 5. You have plenty of time to beat the rest of us. We’re all playing badly. Good to see you, btw.
