Liberals claim that the War on Poverty has failed because we didnt spend enough money. Their answer is just to spend more. But the facts show otherwise.
Since its beginning, U.S. taxpayers have spent $22 trillion on Johnsons War on Poverty (in constant 2012 dollars). Adjusting for inflation, thats three times more than was spent on all military wars since the American Revolution.

I had the DUTY, lonnnngggg resisted, to go to the Texas State Capitol Complex yesterday. Specifically, I was going to the State Comptroller and the Secretary of State’s offices.
I got the usual bureaucratic run around but while standing around “waiting” I observed that practically ALL these bureaus “clients” were white and practically all the bureaucrats were black or Hispanic with an occasional white person and all them seemed to perform a license plate like perfunctory task and when done they would just stop and stare into space waiting for the next “client” to step forward.
Then, after a half century plus breathing air on this earth it hit me like a ton of bricks, seriously! “What would our society do with all these people if the government didn’t CREATE out of whole cloth some simple little task for them to do at 75 grand each per year? So, as for our society, isn’t some little bureaucratic job/task better than paying them (welfare) to sit at home in a government house and cut coupons?
Maybe conservatives (me!?) are wrong! Pay that single mom 75 grand to file that same form in the same file cabinet in the same drawer, in the same building and in the same room and the same cubicle for 30 years! Cheaper than welfare? At least the form gets filed?!
This is also a nail in the coffee to the Starvists...the people/fraudsters promoting the idea that millions of Americans are hungry or starving. I can barely listen to the radio for ten minutes before I hear an ad whining about about the hungry and starving people in the country. Well, if even 98% of the poorest Americans admit they’re well fed, where are all the starving people?
And the fattest.
The War On Poverty = The War To Elect Democrats
The purpose of the Democrat Party is to elect thieves to office so that they have access to the public treasuries in order to loot them.
Bill Clinton spent The Peace Dividend to buy votes for Democrats. Where is The War On Poverty peace dividend?
And the least appreciative and the most ungrateful...................
I don’t understand how your example ends poverty. I see it as raising the poverty line by one dollar. Then again, I’m stupid.
Poverty won.
No, but you will get Paul's support and votes so that the plunder will keep coming.
LBJ's original goal was to buy votes for the Democratic party. Self-support never entered into it.
I think you missed the point. I was trying to show my students that poverty is a relative concept and that, unless you can enforce a perfectly-even distribution of income, eliminating poverty is impossible. All attempts at a perfect distribution of income have failed throughout history, and the War on Poverty was doomed from the day Johnson announced it. It was, and sitll is, purely a political ploy to win votes. In that sense, it was a success. In all other respects, an abject failure.
One more fact that will NEVER show up in 'Black History 101"
IMO throw them all over the border with the illegals to peddle that stuff elsewhere.
Indeed
1.shelter check
2.food check
3.color TV check
4.cell phone check
5.welfare card check
That is moving back toward the Founders' idea of only permitting property owners to vote. It makes a lot of sense and tends to avoid what de Tocqueville saw - the ability of the people to vote "themselves largess out of the public treasury."
It's rarely mentioned but about $11 trillion of that was spent on unionized government do-littles. They get the day off to vote because 15 minutes effort is about their normal workload.
And very, very, very few of them are skinny from lack of food. In fact, quite the opposite.
Exactly. With more “takers” of public funds (51% now) that those paying for spending, the system is doomed if things don’t change. Take a look at Greece, for example.
I wonder if perhaps a war on poverty could've worked if (1) the US stayed self-sufficient without rights and power moving up away from individuals, communities and states and (2) the US hadn't continually imported more poor people to undermine our economy and our values
