"We Are Groot."
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy ruled the box office this weekend with a fantastic $94 million. That's easily the biggest debut ever for an August release; the previous record holder, The Bourne Ultimatum, opened to $69.3 million in 2007.
Meanwhile, James Brown biopic Get On Up took third place with a modest $14 million debut.
This weekend reversed the box office slump in a big way: the top 12 earned $172.6 million, which is up a whopping 40 percent from the same frame last year. With a packed line-up of major releases coming up, this August is almost certainly going to be the biggest one ever.
Among recent Marvel movies, Guardians of the Galaxy's opening is nearly on par with Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million, and is noticeably higher than Thor: The Dark World's $85.7 million. That's pretty remarkable considering the Guardians were unknown to most moviegoers a year ago, and have few obvious connections to the Avengers at the moment.

Why do they keep making outdated rock star biographies like this? They’re all the same, they start out great but always end up tragic and sad, and the movies never make any money. Are they just full-length ads for the soundtrack?
I really liked the end credit scene, but would be very surprised if it was setting up for a sequel. Without spoiling it, I think it is safe to say that the scene was an homage to one of the biggest box office bombs of the 1980s.
Freddie Mercury is next......................
If I remember right, he was basically altered for the purpose of being law enforcement “Ranger” Rocket in order to help serve a lunatic asylum.
Haven’t seen the movie yet - looking forward to it - but interesting that of all characters that one is being considered for a reboot.
It POURED in the northeast over the weekend.
so people go to theaters?
Yes! It’s late summer, kids are bored to death, can’t go to the beach. What else to do but take them to the movies. The perfect movie storm.
Love to do that. Minor little problem, I work during the early show (grin)
Of course the money is the only thing that matters to them but I also think that keeping quiet on actual attendance data helps keep us little old peons from noticing declining viewership and ever inflating ticket costs.
So you say Guardians of galaxy is a better film?
LOL, no.
Marvel's Star Wars comic book (immediately following the first film) had a giant green rabbit.
It’s funny how $$$ sales of tickets (not numbers) make headlines, as if anyone who does not have a financial stake in the movie (production team or studio investor) would give a damn.
“Ooooh! I bet my ticket money on the number one winner! Boo ya!”
Don’t know. Haven’t seen it. Could be a big stinker. But when it comes to mindless driveling crap it would have a long way to go to beat The Exorcist and it’s spawn.
Okay for, say, a 10-year-old who's seen Back to the Future, all the Star Wars movies, all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and the recent Godzilla? Language is an issue (he knows the words, he's been to Walmart, but he's not allowed to use them), but mostly want to avoid sexual stuff and overly bloody violence.
The violence is bloodless( I Can not recall any blood, unless maybe some alien blood) and the sexual stuff is not really there.
Thanks!
