The daily allowance for a person's sugar intake should be halved to six teaspoons, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.
Draft guidance published by the international body advises a dramatic reduction in sugar consumption to help avoid mounting health problems including obesity and tooth decay.
The WHO is proposing to retain its current formal recommendation that no more than 10 per cent of an individual's calories should come from sugar the equivalent of 12 "level" teaspoons a day for the average adult.
However, its draft guidelines state that a further reduction to 5 per cent "would have additional benefits". The lower limit amounts to around six teaspoons less than the levels of sugar in a 50g Mars Bar.
The move comes amid growing evidence that sugar contributes to a range of chronic diseases. It follows calls by scientists for the recommendation to be halved.
The WHO's announcement comes after a study by the University of Southern California found that eating too much protein could be as dangerous as smoking for middleaged people.
Separately a leading heart scientist has warned that NHS guidelines advising people to cut down on highfat foods may be putting the public at risk. Dr James DiNicolantonio warns that more focus is needed on the "harms" of consuming high levels of carbohydrates and sugar.
The WHO limits apply to all "free" sugar, which is sugar that is added to foods by the manufacturer, plus that naturally present in honey, syrups, and fruit juices.
The announcement came after Dame Sally Davies, Britain's chief medical officer, suggested a sugar tax to curb obesity rates.

Nanny State PING, old mates of mine!
It's not just the sugar, it's ALL the carbs. Eat too many carbs of any kind and you will put on weight. Man does not live by bread alone, in fact it will kill you off early.........
If you are living in some UN supported Hell hole with a distended stomach and flies in your eyes, you don’t need a bowl of alfalfa sprouts and kale, you need sugar.
/s
Then there is the “hidden” sugar.. carbs Here’s the carb formula..... Carbs minus fiber divided by 5 = #tsp sugar. 6 tsps is really easy to reach through carbs.
I’m not a particular sweets eater, and I gave up pop a couple of years ago. But I use up half that allotment just in my morning coffee.
I switched to low-carb with exercise, lost 85 pounds, ended almost all my diabetic meds, and now have normal blood A1C levels. I feel like I’m 35 (I’m 50).
Low-carb really does work. (You gotta do aerobic exercise too though.)
You know, once EVERYTHING is ‘(contra)banned,’ none of this stuff is going to matter. These Nanny Staters are putting themselves out of business.
(But don’t tell them that. Tee-Hee!)
Proud of ya! That’s quite the accomplishment!
I love seeing people making the rest of their lives the BEST of their lives! Good for you! :)

LOL. Certainly you don’t think that message was intended for folks close to death from starvation.
My doc says half the salt, wife says half the beer, dietician says half the fat, and now WHO says half the sugar.
I'm gonna have to want twice as much just to be in compliance.
Wow! Wish I had seen this before I finished off the bag of Speckled Malted Milk Eggs. Lol
Once you reach your ideal weight you can just maintain that level and cut back on the aerobics a bit and just do yard work and stuff like that..........
Excuse me while I search for the bon bon box.
The WHO has no business telling heathy or well nourished people what they should eat. Their primary directive and reason for existence is to feed starving people and getting sick people medical care in the kind of UN sanctioned hell hole where the people have access to neither.
Bags of sugar are much more effective in saving starving children than bushels of kale.
Beyond that, the WHO should mind their own business.
I was just like you, I had to have sugar in my coffee. Then I found Splenda. It is the only artificial sweetener I like. Tastes like sugar to me. I bought a Sodastream because they make diet mixes that use Splenda, whereas diet coke and pepsi are made with Nutrasweet.
Thx. My wife's doing exactly the same thing (it's how we met). But she's only lost a fraction of her goal weight and it's bumming her out. I tell her it is simply the metabolism: Guys just burn calories way faster. I'm 6'4, she's 5'9, and I just burn it a lot quicker.
It's starting to bug her, though, to the point she doesn't like to go out with me in public anymore. (When we were both heavy it wasn't a problem.) And that doesn't help because the temptation is to simply give up and stuff her face full of popcorn in front of the flat-panel. I just tell her I love her and don't care how long it takes, just do your best. She just needs to be patient and she'll catch up eventually. Her health is what matters.
hmm...Your brain runs on glucose like a car runs on gas. Glucose is a sugar. Therefore, halving your sugar intake means your brain won’t run as efficiently.
I don’t see anything wrong with that...if your goal is to get people to stop thinking as much...
