Chipotle says global warming could force guacamole off its menus

Chipotle lovers everywhere have been fussing and fretting over hints the company may have to cut the beloved green gunk from its menu due to global warming. Buried in the company’s 10-K filing from early February, under the “risks to business” heading, the company had this to say:

“Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients,” said Chipotle CMG .

That’s the buildup. The clincher came when Chipotle said if prices go up for crucial ingredients, it could mean an adverse hit on operation results. And then…

“Alternatively, in the event of cost increases with respect to one or more of our raw ingredients, we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas, rather than paying the increased cost for the ingredients.”

So many strawmen to choose from to mask my true intentions, let me see: racism, sexism, religitardism, AGW. That’s it! AGW!

this is BS , I grow avocados in hawaii and they are loaded on the trees , falling off the trees , literally a dime a dozen .

Why so cheap ? Because the california avocado lobby CALAVO has long worked with the USDA and keeps all Hawaiian avos from being able to be shipped to hawaii . You like guac? Move to Hawaii = all you can eat . We feed them to our dogs , which love them and have nice sleek coats

I mean USAD/CALAVO prohibits shipping Hi. avos to the Mainland . So they maintain their little monopoly with their crappy varieties of avos

I’m with you, never liked any of it. Too many refried beans that taste like mushed cardboard. Went to a Chipotle with friends once; seemed like all the preparers were illegals (no english spoken behind the line) and the food was sub-par at best. Let em close.

“lemon-sized” Hass avocados"

Was in an earlier comment. The Avocados in Belize are ENORMOUS! Don't get hit by one!

Great tasting, too!

Belize is HOT and HUMID, a "victim" of "Global Warming".....

As Bill Cosby used to say, "Riiiiiiiight!"

"Chipotle’s Chris Arnold told the L.A. Times on Wednesday morning that the disclosure was routine: “As a public company ... we are required to disclose any potential issues that could have potential impact on our business, and we do that very thoroughly.”"

Yeah, you can do it without being an idiot liberal who alienates some existing and potential customers with flawed science. All you have to do is say that your supply has temporarily dried-up, or that they're sub-standard, or too expensive. But, no. You had to expose yourself as a moron by making a political statement.

Forrest Gump was right...

That’s really interesting. I live in Los Angeles and a lot of older homes have avocado, lemon and fig trees that were planted back in the 20’s and 30’s.

Because we all know how bad warm weather is for avocados.

Brilliant. This puts a .50 caliber AP round into a statement as stupid as Chipotle just issued.

It couldn’t have anything to do with the price of avocados! Nope, it’s “global warming.” And what a warm winter it is!

Avocados are on sale locally at the lowest price I have seen in a long time.

They are probably imported from Mexico or some other place thousands of miles away but even with the transportation costs they are still about half of what they cost six months ago.

Lawyers are HEAVILY involved in drafting the Risk Factors in a 10-K. I wouldn’t read this as any sort of political statement. Rather, the lawyers are making sure they cover themselves in the event there is a shortage of any of their ingredients which drives up prices.

Referring to global climate change potentially impacting prices is not the same as endorsing man-made global warming. The climate does change and I think everyone agrees with that. It’s the cause and the speed of change that is up for debate.
