This is a horrible idea, as Col. West points out. It undermines uniformity and conformity, which is fine for civilians but absolutely antithetical to to military philosophy. There are also more practical concerns. A Marine is going to regret his religious beard about ten seconds after hearing the words "gas, gas, gas!" Just try and get a seal on that mask with a religious beard or piercings.
There is a very real need for uniformity in the ranks. This has been true since man began forming armies. As Col. West points out, this sort of policy change would be a hypocrisy. But it is also a conceit; the idea that we are going to create some perfectly beautiful Diversity Corps, some United Colors of Benetton military force that's going to Starfleet around the globe cleaning up oil spills, getting cats out of trees, and generally being the benign, nerf-weapon carrying flower children the Obamas of the world picture when they say "Give peace a chance" in their feetie-pajama cocoa meetings.

Nothing more than feelings?
this is about doing everything to destroy the last superpower’s army.
we better take the damn country back soon.
Is there a single functioning gonad amoung the entire fking Joint Chiefs?
Right on the mark IMO.
I remember my daddy measuring the lay of his ribbons above his left breast pocket with a metal ruler.
And those springs in his fatigue cover and pants’ legs.
Ah...probably why I never followed him and joined the Corps!
Sounds like a self-correcting problem.
Looks like the ‘crossdressers’ won another one.
Every day this bunch of misfits in this mismaladministration make it harder and harder for me to be supportive of the Military.
I realize that when I went in in ‘56 the ‘old timers’ (still on AD and already out) said “Our generation was soft and couldn’t hack it” the same was probably said by the CW Vets when it came to “Remember the Maine”, the RTM for the WWI crowd and the WWI crowd towards the WWII.
Just like the two best duty stations you EVER had were the one you came from and the one you were going to.
The NATO standard is 9 seconds to don the Gas mask.
the first couple of months/years of a real war will separate the warriors from those that joined for "benefits". All our wars have been this way. All wars are this way. Same as it ever was, same as it ever was,
saw a great commercial for the army where a drill sergeant was asking recruits what they wanted to be and one of them said, "graphic artist". I kid you not. I almost spewed laughing at the thought of somebody answering that in boot camp.
Please compare the first of these to the second video...that's all that needs to be said.

True, but you can imagine that 30 or so years from now the PRESENT DRONE ‘operators’ will be griping about how hard ‘they’ had it and how easy the BNG’s have it.
Of course like WJC pointed out ‘WE’ were the real DRAFT DODGERS - you know enlisted so we wouldn’t get drafted... Ha..
I seem to remember a lot of ‘us’ went in to
Get away from Mom
Get away from ‘girls’
Get away from ‘weaklings’
Get away from the ‘Do Funnies’.
Get away from the ‘Judge’ and ‘Jury of your peers’..
Now ‘they’ are not only subjected to being in Boot Camp with ‘them’ but also to have ‘them’ as DI’s and instructors.
Seriously look at an after action or casualty report from WW2. Scary crap..... Entire ships sunk, company size WIA/KIAs , thousands of civilians killed in nightly bombings...... The current touchy feely ROE will last until the first relative of a chosen elite gets smoked by a infiltrator or blown up by a domestic IED.
Yep, that could be the future, alright.
