This what happened. The only competent sign interpreters they had in South Africa are White. They didn't want a White person up on stage for the world to see so they grabbed the best Black interpreter they could find. He was it.
Instead of blaming the mental dullness of the phony interpreter, the people that hired him, and entire South African government, because it might give people the wrong idea of the competancy of blacks they chalk it up to "madness".
