(Update: Adding more on opposition to Core, where Duncan spoke)
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told a group of state schools superintendents Friday that he found it fascinating that some of the opposition to the Common Core State Standards has come from white suburban moms who all of a sudden their child isnt as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isnt quite as good as they thought they were.
Yes, he really said that. But he has said similar things before. What, exactly, is he talking about?
In his cheerleading for the controversial Common Core State Standards which were approved by 45 states and the District of Columbia and are now being implemented across the country (though some states are reconsidering) Duncan has repeatedly noted that the standards and the standardized testing that goes along with them are more difficult than students in most states have confronted.
The Core was designed to elevate teaching and learning. Supporters say it does that; critics say it doesnt and that some of the standards, especially for young children, are not developmentally appropriate. Whichever side you fall on regarding the Cores academic value, there is no question that their implementation in many areas has been miserable so miserable that American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, a Core supporter, recently compared it to another particularly troubled rollout:
You think the Obamacare implementation is bad? The implementation of the Common Core is far worse.

Yeah, I knew I was gonna catch some heat for that.
thank God my kids are grown. I’ve got a kid thats a teacher, I guess I’ll be asking then. I seen a website that said Texas rejected it, so my assumption was common core was a no go statewide.
thanks for the info
CSCOPE I’ve heard of. No lesson plans, just follow the crap the government sends out.
Arne Duncan is a childish, racist, thug... just another Chicago Obama henchman.
“Good grief, is there a single democrat who is not a wanna be Nazi and racist @sshat at the same time?”

You CAN exempt your kids from those standardized tests. Just write a note. The school will hate it, but that’s there problem.
Black Democrats will be upset as Common Core will (once again) fail to make illegitimate, ill-read, ill-tempered, and ill-dressed hoodlums equal to even a rather dull white kid whose family could have come straight off the set of “Leave it to Beaver”.
States are not required to adopt common core standards (it is not curriculum, by the way.) 45 states have voluntarily signed up.

ZeroCare was not yet the Law of the Land, but soon would be.
Wasted time can never be regained. I really believe I could have had a Bachelor’s degree by the time I actually gradiated public child-care had I been challenged at “school”
Parents also need to pay attention to who is on the local School Board, making rules & choosing books for the kids.
When I was a kid, ONLY the local parents & landowners were on the school board. They LOOKED at the books we would be using. They chose the teacher.
NONE of these people were ‘teachers’.
Today, it seems only ‘former teachers’ can be on school boards. That is tainting the whole system, IMO.
There are 4 kids in my family, all of whom went to the local schools. EVERY SINGLE one of us has been self-employed most of our lives....3 with employees, and myself who operated alone. One brother had as many as 65 employees working 2 shifts. Not exactly Microsoft, but a decent living for all concerned.
The entire education system in America is frozen by tenure.
Eliminate tenure.
Then we can fix education.
Tenure is what is wrong with US education.
Yeah, that link to Common Core didn’t have any of the study material-courses noted. Just the goal of all kids learning. And natch everyone wants kids to learn and not graduating as illiterate dopes.
