The GOP’s kamikaze mission to stop Obamacare
Washington Post ^ | August 2, 2013 | by Ezra Klein

Posted on 08/02/2013 4:47:28 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

The campaign against Obamacare began as a campaign for self-interest. Obamacare, conservatives promised, would raise your taxes, take away your doctor and possibly put you in front of a death panel. The fight to keep it from passing was a fight to keep bad things from happening.

But the effort has devolved into something much weirder: A campaign of self-sacrifice. The current crop of Republican strategies ask conservative congressmen to hurt their constituents and their political prospects, conservative governors to hurt their states, and conservative activists to hurt themselves. It’s a kamikaze mission to stop Obamacare.

But behind all of it is a mounting desperation. Obamacare beat a filibuster. It beat the right’s legal challenge. Its namesake beat the Republican Party’s nominee for president. Come 2014, it will start helping millions of Americans afford health insurance, and come the 2016 election it will have been delivering health care to tens of millions of Americans for almost three years. That’s not the kind of program that just goes away in American politics.

And so Republicans are desperate to stop it from going into effect in October, and from working smoothly after that. But desperation doesn’t always lead to good strategies.

Obamacare, conservatives promised, would raise your taxes, take away your doctor and possibly put you in front of a death panel

There's no "conservatives promised" about it - it is, in fact, doing all of that and much more. This author writes as though there are no examples of this already happening or that the IPA doesn't exist.

Has this author not noticed the numerous medical facilities that were online to be opened that now won't be opened due directly to this law? How does that provide healthcare? Has this author not noticed the numerous Americans who have lost their health insurance and will lose their health insurance because of this law - either because it will no longer be offered, or they can no longer afford it because of the massive price increases as a direct result of this law? How does that help deliver more healthcare? Has the author not noticed many people have lost work, lost their jobs entirely and the countless jobs people won't be able to get because they won't be created as a direct result of this law - which not only takes away their ability to afford healthcare, but they can't even put food on the table for themselves and their families? How does that help increase access to healthcare? What about all of the jobs lost at companies that provided student loans - all of those people lost their health insurance and means of supporting themselves and their families. How does that increase access to healthcare? What about the significant reduction in production of and research into medical equipment, which will result in it being more difficult to get such equipment to treat the sick and injured who need them in order to be cured or live a better quality of life, and potential new devices will now never be invented because of this law? How does that help our health care system?

Could go on and on...didn't even mention the astronomical costs way beyond the projections that will cause the program to eventually collapse even if it "worked" as well as they falsely claim it will. It's extraordinary the level of ignorance, stupidity, and/or dishonesty perpetuated by the left on this issue. They'll still claim Britain has a great healthcare system even though now not only do countless numbers of people die due to inadequate availability of healthcare, but thousands are now known to die due to lack of food and water.

That’s exactly what these programs passed under the cover of “helping the poor” are indeed really all about - codifying an aristocracy of a super rich, wealthy elite to rule over the rest and these policies will help prevent anymore from accumulating wealth to challenge their position. As someone else here stated on a thread, they don’t care if the pie gets smaller, just as long as they are the only ones with a piece of it.

It's not a "kamikaze" attack. More of a Charge of the Light Brigade except that the Russian guns are loaded with wiffle balls.

Obamacare is a train wreck of epic proportions and it would be seppuku for the Republicans not to oppose it every chance they get.

I didn't think it was possible to design a health care system that was more expensive, less accessible and less efficient than the one in place before Obamacare, but there is every indication is that he's managed to do it.

The supply of health care is not elastic.

As a result of decisions made 20 years ago, a ceiling was placed on the number of new doctors trained every year. This has resulted in a shortage of doctors today. If the administration wanted to do something about this, and if they started tomorrow, they might begin to alleviate the shortage -- in about 20 years. But they don't want to, since they don't even understand how this is a problem.

Even they saw that an increase the use of the cheap, simple things would have a huge impact on quality of life and life expectancy in the US -- blood pressure control and statins before the stroke or heart attack, quitting smoking before the lung cancer develops, weight loss before the pancreas fails, etc. -- they don't have the people to do it.

Instead, we'll see more $70,000 chemotherapy that extends life by a few months. And will cost $100,000 and that cost will continue to rise under Obamacare.

"Kamikazi attacks were occasionally successful. During WWII 47 ships were sunk and another 300 were damaged by kamikaze attacks."

They were acts of desperation to turn around a losing cause. I am at the point of hoping our guys try it, too...and for the same reason.

When all these media Marxists frantically try to convince the country that ObamaCare is going to be the salvation of the nation and the damnation of Republicans, you know they are scared spitless that this will be the greatest disaster in the history of politics.

When thousands of doctors quit and no one can get medical help except government officials and rich Democrats, Obama will be lucky to sneak out of town in the middle of the night.

Ezra Klein has no idea how successful and devastating the Japanese Kamikazi attacks were on the US & British Navy & Marine Corps in the PTO of World War II. He and his communist fellow traveler, America hater, POTUS Barack Hussein (I love Muslim Morsi and all the Muslim Terrorist Brothers in Obama beloved, Muslim Brotherhood) Obama have no idea of any American history unless it is about overthrowing or undermining the American Republic!!!

Yes......folks, Obama and his minions ar getting worried big time. McCain and his RINOs are not gonna stop the likes of GOP Senators, Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul and their steaming hot defund Obamacare petition!!!

Sign it today and join over 200,000 other American Citizens urging the defunding of Obamacare!!! (www.dontfundobamacare.com).

Folks, sign and endorse it this evening, like right now!!! Also, IMHO......it would be helpful if other Freepers commented and posted calls to arms to sign & support the defund Obamacare!!! Thanks!!!

Those kamikaze pilots in their out of date ships, and there patriotic zeal sank a lot of American vessels and killed a great many US seaman. They were dedicated and if Japan had more they might have forestalled defeat. Those men were willing to give their lives to stop the aboniation of defeat. I only hope the Republicans on the Right are just as willing to stop the war machine of Obama and his Progressive/communists and his move to destroy the American Health Industry—Imagine the power if he uses it like he has the IRS and NSA? Stop this sucker! Banzai!

What a load of crap.

The kamakazi were desperation failures. While some succeeded many many failed. They were the product of losers with no other weapons.

We are not that desperate nor are we losers

Desperation? Yes. But they—kamikaze—became the total sacrifice by young men (in THEIR minds, mind you) that were made with the intent that not a single Allied boot would touch what was for them the “sacred soil of their Japanese homeland” and that not a single enemy soldier would make his way to any of their individual home towns, villages and families left behind. It also helped that they were brainwashed by their Fascist clique what an Allied Occupation Force would do to them, particularly their young women (Japanese sisters, girlfriends and wives). They were more than happy to take to the skies to do it and therein lied their unfathomable motivation. Just telling all what was truly, subjectively in their own minds at the time as cornered humans. Not justifying, but explaining (their perspectives which, while aberrated, were quite sincere but still a desperate waste). They could have gone back defeated, yes, but FREE (actually) and alive. Unlike Palestinian mothers, MOST Japanese mothers near the hopeless end, would have overwhelmingly preferred this.

Conservatives (in our own minds) are in a similar position. We are losing badly, our culture and it’s respect for the constitution is collapsing yet we feel (know) that to retain the America of old is our only hope...at any cost. We humans are like that, apparently. And whether we are right or wrong will never be agreed upon by all the vast majority of the inhabitants of this planet.

"Obamacare, conservatives promised, would raise your taxes, take away your doctor and possibly put you in front of a death panel"

What about that is not true?

This nincompoop liberals think that every doctor (YOUR DOCTOR) will just sit there and "accept" your Obamacare card.

Here's a newsflash: THEY WON'T

Why WOULD they? So they can be underpaid for the service they provide, and not even make enough on the visit to pay for the overhead to run the office?

Mr. Klein needs to understand that the "free" care ain't so hot when the nearest doctor stupid enough to take it is 40 miles away, and doesn't speak English. Not many doctors have an all "Medicaid" clientele. They'd go broke trying to do so, unless they are government subsidized.

And Mr. Klein, just where does the money come from?

Uh, higher taxes.

Ah, the last time I checked my history, the Kamakazi attacks during the end of WW II, although "desperate measures" were devastatingly effective at damaging and destroying the U.S. Navy vessels and allied personnel. I believe the Navy lost more men from these attacks killed and wounded, than from any other method of attack. If Japan had used this tactic earlier when they still had more planes and experienced pilots, some historians have surmised it would have stalled or reversed the Allied advance in the Pacific theater.

The liberal press can label it as a suicidally desperate measure, but it works. We are literally at the end of the war against Obama DEATHcare. This is the last chance we have to kill this monstrosity before it becomes law and destroys America from within. Once it becomes law and "enshrined" as an "entitlement" it will NEVER be repealed! I know this for a fact because no "entitlement" has ever been repealed, once it has become law.

Like the end of the war for Japan, these are desperate times and desperate times call for desperate measures. The ultimate question is this: are there enough Republican, and even some Democrat politicians left in Washington, DC who love the country and care about saving Americaand their constituents more than themselves or their political careers? While I totally disagree with the goals and atrocities of Imperial Japan, those brave Kamakazi pilots loved their country more than themselves and although misguided, were willing to give their very lives in their fight to preserve and protect it.

I sincerely pray we have politicians who love America enough willing to do the same, no matter what the cost to deliver us from this unholy abomination known as "Obama Care". By he way, isn't the name ironic because Obama has proven time and time again throughout his life, political career and so-called "presedency" that he doesn't care about anyone ore anything but HIMSELF and he doesn't give a D_ _ _ about the needs of others at all. This statement is true and is born out by the fact that Obama has a half brother in Kenya living in a CARDBOARD SHACK earning TWELVE DOLLARS A MONTH and Obama HASN'T GIVEN HIS DESTITUTE BROTHER A PENNY TO EASE HIS SUFFERING! That is how much Obama really "cares"!

Oh yes, we should all be concerned that the Republican party should loose more influence by treading heavy on Obamacare... NOT... the Republican party is loosing influence, but not because it is trying to stop OC, just the opposite; because it is lackadaisical about stopping OC and Amnesty for illegals. In fact, I for one spit on Republicans, especially McCain, Graham and now the Cuban Boy Wonder... though I do like Texas Ted Cruz... Republicans as a party can go to hell along with the Demoncrats. If ever we needed a third party, it is now...
