I think they were probably careless because he appeared to be cooperating and he grabbed somebody’s gun or at least attempted to do so and was shot by one of them. The article mentions two shots.
He was an MMA specialist with a quick temper and it sounds to me as if they might have underestimated him. Also, they were interviewing him at home, on his own turf, which is never a good idea.
Part of the reason for the secrecy is no doubt to avoid tipping off the local Chechens so that they can hide their jihadis, but I wonder if another part isn’t perhaps a local FBI decision to avoid tipping off headquarters (meaning Holder).
