I immediately though of this movie about the E. German Stasi when these scandals broke a week or so ago, The Lives of Others. Has anyone seen it? Do you agree?

Best movie I’ve seen in a long time....well worth it.
Exceptional film. Once you get engrossed in it, you forget it’s in German.
Both my mom and I loved it. Very moving and well done.
Great movie!
great movie
Netflix has it, BTW.
Same for my other all-time favorite German movie, “Goodbye, Lenin!”
I almost peed myself laughing at that.
Best movie ever made, I have never been so captured by a movie maker.
One of those movies where you’ll laugh a lot, and shed a tear or two.
You’re exactly right about that. Another one you get so engrossed in and forget about the subtitles is Black Book. Outstanding! So easy to follow. It’s German name is Swartzbock.
I’ve stopped counting how often I have recommended this movie to everyone I know and on FR as well.
It should be required viewing in every high school in the land. William F. Buckley thought it the most significant film he’d ever seen.
If you have the dvd version be sure to take in the director’s comments and the other short features and commentary. The main actor ( the Stasi interrogator ) was himself a victim of the Stasi.
The trilogy of books ( Child 44, The Secret Speech, and Agent 6 ) by Tom Rob Smith depicting life in Soviet Russia is also riveting. The prose is stunning. Child 44 has been picked up by Ridley Scott to be turned into a movie.
Or Sophie Scholl, Die Lezten Tage (Sophie Scholl The Final Days)
The guy that played Freisler had him down to a T.
Excellent movie!
The Lives of Others is about a society in which God is supplanted by the State. The State is feared.
A near equally mesmerizing film is The Separation. A film about a society where the belief in the wrath and judgment of God is so feared that man’s laws are almost unnecessary. I doubt this film was based on an actual event, but it is a fascinating insight into such a culture.
In The Separation the God is Allah. It does make you wonder how you would lead your life under a God of fear and not a God of love.
The Lives of Others is actually on YouTube. It’s a 360p version, but it’s quite crisp and is easily watchable in the intermediate size.
It’s a 02:17:35 movie.

I fear that will not be the case with Ubama's Stasi.
If the noose starts tightening around his neck, all he has to do is stop the EBT payments on the first of the month and the country will be in flames the next day so he can declare martial law and Janet can start using those billions of rounds DHS has stockpiled.
