Thirty hostages reported killed in Algeria assault (12 minutes ago)

(Reuters) - Thirty hostages and at least 11 Islamist militants were killed on Thursday when Algerian forces stormed a desert gas plant in a bid to free many dozens of Western and local captives, an Algerian security source said.

Two Japanese, two Britons and a French national were among at least seven foreigners killed, the source told Reuters. Eight of the dead hostages were Algerian. The nationalities of the rest, as well as of perhaps dozens more who escaped, were unclear.

Americans, Norwegians, Romanians and an Austrian have also been mentioned by their governments as having been captured.

Underlining the view of African and Western leaders that they face a multinational, al Qaeda-linked insurgency across the Sahara - a conflict that prompted France to send troops to neighboring Mali last week - the official source said only two of the 11 dead militants were Algerian, including their leader.

After an operation that appeared to go on for some eight hours, after Algeria refused the kidnappers' demand to leave the country with their hostages, the bodies of three Egyptians, two Tunisians, two Libyans, a Malian and a Frenchman were found. . .

You don’t seem to realize that we’re all in this together. If Islamic terrorism is able to shut down trade and normal life one place, it will swallow that place, expand and move on to another. Jefferson understood that when Islamic pirates were busy shutting down travel and shipping in the Mediterranean; his response was the Marines.

And in Jefferson’s time, there was virtually no chance that the Muslims would attack the continental US, something that is unfortunately not true now.

Actually a pretty crafty move by the President, you can’t have a hostage crisis without hostages.
What IS the Obama connection ? There has to be one......
There is a mountain of cirmunstantial evidence that Benghazi was a distribution center for gunrunning to the Muslim Brotherhood throughout the world. Serious weapons, not just plinkers

Last week, Investors Business Daily ran a story about the Muslim Brotherhood embeded by Obama into the Obama administration.

The Algerians government is secular and left leaning in its roots.

They fought the French for independence in the 1950’s and early 60’s.

Independent Algeria was a ‘haven’ for Black Panthers and other radical Americans around 1970.

Then came the Islamists threatening to win elections and take over the country.

The Algerian government cracked down and used tactics that included assasination squads.

The Algerian government has been fighting the Islamofascists for decades.

I knew they would deal with this situation decisively and they certainly have.

The problem I’ve always had with people using the war on terror,to advocate their own agendas-was that it was always a serious matter. These people can be pretty dangerous, they are only going to be stopped by intelligent and serious measures.

There is always been martyrs of one sort of another, the martyrs here are those Westerners who died at this plant trying to make a living. While at home, their respective government were curtailing their rights. That is a real tragedy.

Does anyone remember when we were backing this group during the second Dubya term? They were called NATO rebels at that point and we sent military advisers there to help them get up on their feet. Anybody? Anybody?

And why, may I ask, do we give any allegiance to Islamists?

Because our first Muslim President is working for them, not us.

And PSST: Don't tell anyone, Obama is trying to keep it a secret that he is a traitor. And surely don't tell anyone Benghazi was about keeping it a secret that the US gave Al Qaeda weapons in Libya and Syria. Obama knows Americans are idiots but eventually some of them might catch on.

They wrote off the hostages completely, in the hopes of showing that it does NO good to take hostages in the first place.

It's really hard to have to decide to sacrifice the lives of those hostages, but I think you're right.

Chances are they were essentially dead anyway. Knowing what muslims will do to hostages, it may have been the most merciful thing to do to them.

What an awful situation.

Who understands Arab terrorists better than Arabs...?

Exactly.
