WASHINGTON Truth is, retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf didn't care much for his popular "Stormin' Norman" nickname.
The seemingly no-nonsense Desert Storm commander's reputed temper with aides and subordinates supposedly earned him that rough-and-ready moniker. But others around the general, who died Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at age 78 from complications from pneumonia, knew him as a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who preferred the somewhat milder sobriquet given by his troops: "The Bear."
That one perhaps suited him better later in his life, when he supported various national causes and children's charities while eschewing the spotlight and resisting efforts to draft him to run for political office.
He lived out a quiet retirement in Tampa, where he'd served his last military assignment and where an elementary school bearing his name is testament to his standing in the community.
Schwarzkopf capped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 -- but he'd managed to keep a low profile in the public debate over the second Gulf War against Iraq, saying at one point that he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and the Pentagon predicted.
Schwarzkopf was named commander in chief of U.S. Central Command at Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base in 1988, overseeing the headquarters for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly two dozen countries stretching across the Middle East to Afghanistan and the rest of central Asia, plus Pakistan.

AMEN!
My fondest memory of Gen. Schwarzkopf was during the first Gulf war. He was giving a briefing to the media on the operation where they used stealth assets and misdirection to flank the Iraqis and kick their arses handily.
When he was describing the operation he had a noticeable gleam in his eye and a very wry smile on his face. He was having a blast showing off what his troops could do. I'll never forget it.
In pace requiescat General.
General Stormin Norman, Thank you for your service. God Bless your family in the time of loss. Resting place should be Arlington National.
General Schwarzkopf
Rest gently, sir, you deserve it.
RIP, Sir.
Sounds very 'Alinsky-ish". Did you ever notice that a lot of liberalism is based on the negative aspects of human behavior? Deceit, arrogance, jealousy, revenge and greed? They like to use "greed" as a malediction against conservatives, but in reality, we view 'greed' as having a very constructive component. (I say this using the term 'greed', because it doesn't mean the same thing)
There is a component of what liberals call 'greed' that animates the 'invisible hand' of capitalism, and makes capitalism the proverbial tide that lifts all boats equally.
We call it "making money"...they call it "making too much money".
Well...don't want to hijack this thread of an honorable man, so I better stop digressing.
Man, I like the way you think. Just reading that post made me feel, if even for a moment, that this country isn’t lost yet.
Good job, and...thank you.
Well done, General. May you rest in peace.
” battleships bombarding the enemy with 16 inch, F-4s flying SEAD, OV-10s instead of drones, artillery prep before attacks, B-52s carpet bombing with iron bombs three times a day, for weeks at a time,,, Daisy cutters being dropped just because. “
That’s the way to fight a war.
Thank you for posting this picture. It seems that a great many well-wishers on this thread have not taken the trouble to learn how to spell the General’s name correctly. To me, that is somewhat disrespectful.
“This is still America. We will see his like again. We just don’t know his name yet.”
Well I hope that whomever it is, shows up soon. Time is running out...
“Not to start thread drift but you know who else did this very thing. George Patton. They called him “blood and guts” but it was the enemy’s blood and guts left on the ground.”
He did indeed! My uncle fought with/for him as a K-9 scout in WWII and always had the highest praise for Patton. He believed that had Patton been supported by Eisenhower, instead of wasting resources with Montgomery’s futile effort into Arnhem, the war would have been won prior to the horrific Battle of the Bulge.
Oh what a shock! RiP Gemeral Schwartzkopf
RIP
General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr, USA
Rest in Peace, General Schwarzkopf.
May God bless and console his family.
He was a true warrior and a faithful soldier.
It seems there’s a ZOT or at the very least a time out for a General Schwarzkopf detractor.
I am not aware of the cause of his death, but I did hear that he had prostate cancer.
Yea I remember that also from a long ways back. I did a quick search on his name & prostate Cancer. Wiki has that he died of complications from Pneumonia. He had Prostate Cancer back in the 1990's and evidently was cured of it.
Whatever took him, it has been a totally crappy year. I mourn his passing, and I shed a tear when I heard about it.
When it was his time in the spotlight, he was ready and made the most of it (not his fault Bush didn’t try to finish the job). That’s the definition of a great general.
I haven’t read all the posts but it might be mentioned that his father was the one who convicted the man alleged to have murdered Charles Lindbergh’s baby.
