Tropical Storm Isaac threatens to dampen the Republican National Convention Monday in Tampa, Florida. National media outlets are having a grand time anticipating a Grand Old Party washout. Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn (D) announced Wednesday that he is absolutely prepared to call off the convention next week, with anticipated attendance of 70,000 delegates, party officials, journalists, protesters and others. Buckhorn has not indicated that he would attempt to mitigate liberal protests or a hastily planned Joe "Plugs" Biden visit to Tampa during the convention.
Time will tell. Stay tuned...

In 2005 Katrina destroyed the city of New Orleans resulting in the (I believe first-ever) cancellation of the Southern Decadence celebration which is a gay Mardi Gras.
After the city was rebuilt, this event started up again building numbers back to previous 100,000+ levels, but was cancelled again in 2008 due to Hurricane Gustav.
The levels were reduced somewhat in 2011 because Tropical Storm Lee scared off many from outside of New Orleans traveling in for the weekend resulting in about 20% hotel cancellations.
This year’s event is scheduled Wednesday, August 29 through Monday, September 3. I’m praying for rain.

We finally rec’d the keys in early March on a little fixer upper in Ft. Myers after waiting 4 months for short sale approval. After working our behinds off for 5 1/2 months, and putting every penny into this place, Friday we are finally finished when the new front door is installed..........all I can say now is Isaac, go away!
If you don’t mind a little theology here, scripture is full of examples of good folks getting hurt when the culture around them exasperates Jehovah. Sodom & Gomorrah (sodomy and general wickedness), all those Canaanite cities (idolatry), the cities in Judah and Israel (who chose Baal worship and child sacrifice over the faith of Abraham).
Our culture harbors and even promotes idolatry, homosexuality, and the sacrifice of our children at the altar of our own self-indulgence. How could He be pleased with us?
I knew about the Southern Decadence cancellation due to Katrina, not about the others. What will it take to get their attention?
I’d make plans to be out of town that weekend, storm or no storm.

Yep. Expect the shelves to be bare of batteries, bottled water, diapers, etc by tomorrow (if not already).
I hope all Florida FReepers have made adequate preparations.
Now I cannot give any advice because I am 5200 miles or something from Tampa (Wasilla, Alaska)but I have been prepping. For the first time our local Walmart started to carry the one gallon containers of freeze dried food from Augason farms.
Si I have quite a stockpile of those, and spring water to cook with. Its all in a 21’ travel trailer thats completely ready to hit the road or serve as a temporary lodging should I have a fire or an earthquake. My only real great fear is that such a tragedy strikes during the winter.
Well anyway those 5 or 6 gallon buckets of emergency food sounds like a great investment just in case you are forced to evacuate to a motel further up the road, they sell I think a 3 day and a two week version. I would keep a two week bucket available for every member of the household, stencil your kids name on each one, and make sure they are never opened until you need to.
Even if I were a guest at a motel for the convention I would get at least the three day bucket, water and a sterno stove or backpackers stove.

I was sweating for a number of reasons. First, I went through a traumatic storm in Oregon when I was 7. A storm with gusts to 65mph ripped across the state in 1961, knocking the tops of towering fir trees off, through the roof of the house I was in. I still get chills during high wind gusts.
Key West is very low. The building I was in was only about 25 feet above sea level, and was poorly prepared for bad weather. The Truman Annex had only been recently re-opened, and the roof had not been inspected in years.
The Navy had not yet brought emergency food and water to our side of the island. The emergency generator was on the ground floor. Outside. There was only one telephone line, one electric transmission line and one fresh water line onto the island, although a desalinization plant opened while I was there.
I worked for the Commander, U.S. Forces Caribbean. The communications organization was large enough to deploy to support the Admiral when he traveled on business as well as Caribbean forces during exercises, plus enough people left at home to keep HQ supported.
That were enough enlisted people for us to be used for various work parties, so I knew first hand how bad the facilities were. It went so far as to be ordered to throw unwanted furniture from the ‘70’s off 2nd and 3rd floor balconies because there was no other way to remove it. The Navy only wanted to pay to move new furniture up the stairs as buildings were being renovated.
The way I’m reading this is that Isaac will remain in TS status when it hits Cuba. After that the track is for it to be over Cuba for a long time which would definitely weaken it quite a bit for a long time. Therefore my predictions is that even if Isaac “hits” Tampa, it will only be as a rain storm. Not as a hurricane.
By this weekend it will start for sure.
My guess it will be mostly dissipated before Isaac hits Florida. And when it hits, just a lot of rainy weather with not great wind strength.
