My analysis:

Romney- phony. slick. He must grate on peoples' nerves. Not likable. Bachmann- Ametuerish (sp), cheap shot re: 999 Cain- No nonsense. Genuine. Not quite ready though. Newt- The whole package deluxe but too much baggage. Perry- Genuine. Experienced. I could support. Santorum- Strong conservative. Could support.

The left will hand the nation its head - and do it with VERY sub-par politicians - while we conservatives wait for a superstar.

There will be no superstar. We'd better get used to that idea and set ourselves on electing someone conservatives can influence, at least. Most of those up on that stage fit this description imo.

Thats the best we can hope for I'm afraid.

Expanding on your own points:

Romney - Agree on all counts but likable. He's both the snake charmer and the snake. Don't trust him at all and can't see myself voting if he's the nominee, but I know he has the "likable" factor which worries me.

Bachmann - She's been amateurish with the repitition the past, but I think she's getting better. The 999 line was just good fun. But I also think we can find better in this group.

Cain - I've been looking, but I haven't seen anything that tells me "not ready" yet. He has grace under fire (like the recent O'Donnell interview) and I think it speaks volumes to his character. One of my tops right now.

Newt - I've done a 180 on Newt. I actually no longer "get" the baggage angle - he's answered well everything that's been asked. Probably head of the class. (I love that so many said he'd make a good VP in the other debate...I'm fine with that.)

Perry - Nothing special tonight, but he lost me in the past debates. Weak on border and I don't trust him on economics. I also thought the "if you don't agree with subsidizing illegals, then you don't have a heart" line spoke volumes to his character.

Santorum - Good man. Hope his stock keeps rising, if only to get in as VP or a cabinet spot.

I notice you missed a couple (perhaps rightfully so):

Ron Paul - lost me on the 9/11 is our fault and iran questions. if only they could've brought up the fbi story of iran and mexico tonight for him and perry to answer...

Jon Huntsman - needs to go. He'd make a great 1980s Democrat candidate, but he's not what we need right now. I wish the senate passing the China sanctions bill would've been raised tonight too...oh well, another day.

The other guy (Gary Johnson) - also needs to go. I thought he had already gone until the last debate, since he rarely bothers with these things.

Frankly, I see a lot a few good pairings out there. As a man alone, Newt. But for every weakness a strong candidate has, there seems to a pairing that compliments - e.g. take Cain and the knocks on foreign diplomacy and just add Santorum to offset it.

I can't wait until the field gets cut in half (at least) so these debates have more substance.

In this debate only, I found myself gravitating more and more towards Newt.

The headline on the debate in the Bellingham Herald was, Romney says that he can work with good Democrats.

Romney and Chris Christie did robo calls to independents today, my friend was called and let me listen in. Basically, they are saying that Romney and Christie are not so conservative, because they are both from blue states and can work with Democrats, except on spending issues. Bad, bad and worse.

Romney practically said that he is a RINO and tonight in the debate, he basically said that he would repeal Obamacare, change it and feed it right back to us.

Perry did very well, actually had a chance to answer some of the criticism of the Texas jobs plan that was thrown out there by Bachman.

Newt was great. He just keeps getting better.

Cain stumbled a little on Greenspan, but it was only little error.

Santorum was pretty good.

Huntsman and Ron Paul, who cares?

My take is virtually the same as yours.

However, nomination (not done until August of next year) will be judged on primary elections prior to, polling done mid next year... and, quite a bit on how much money front runners have, and to a smaller degree, how closely they tow the party line.

The old saying, 'Money is the mother's milk of politics' shouldn't be among the top criterion for voting for the nominee at the convention, but unfortunately it all too frequently is.

That said, Romney has quite a war-chest full of cash, and unless Perry can gain a bit better traction than he has at the moment, it will be hard for him to compete in coming months - and ~might~ cost him the nomination.

As I've posted elsewhere on FR pages, the rest of the candidates, other than Perry and Romney, aren't going anywhere - at this time. But - the public can change everything, simply through donations and getting out and working hard for a candidate that is behind the leaders.

It's far too early to tell how this will pan out - but you can bet on one thing for certain. The media hate GOP candidates - and will do anything in their power to derail the more conservative of them. Rick Perry is obviously their prime target, and has been since before he declared his candidacy.

here are my thoughts:

Romney.. um.. good grief they gave him a lot of time to talk (it was like the Romney show), and can he TALK! lol just like a good used car salesman, you can’t get him to shut up! Romney is also playing the others like chumps, getting them to destroy each other and divide the conservative vote, leaving him a clear path to the nomination.

Perry - Actually did pretty good, and this is the first time I didn’t see him fade near the end. Maybe being able to sit helped since he’s had back surgery recently, it probably also helped that every single question wasn’t an attack on him and his record. But I feel that he sort of receeded into the background a bit, helped probably by the lack of questions he received.

Cain - hm.. well.. Cain got the spot light he’s been wanting... and... he fell short in my opinion. Nothing catastrophic, but 999 is not the solution to every problem in America. He took some major hits from Santorum and Bachmann (just as Perry had in previous debates), and he is starting to look a little shallow a one trick pony.

Santorum - actually did pretty darn good tonight, this is the first time I actually liked him, and I especially liked it when he talked about the American family.

Paul - same lovable nut as always.

Gingrich - WOW freaking W O W ! what in the world! seriously, that guy is smarter than all the rest of them put together! And unlike the rest of them, I think he could actually fix things. Even with all his baggage I think Gingrich would be the one I would want to be debating Obama. Having said that, I think Gingrich has about a 1% chance of winning, which is sad. Our country is worse off because people like Gingrich are not currently serving it in some capacity.

Bachman - had a decent night too, the first one in a LONG time (with a little help from Romney) and her little dig at cain’s 999 - 666 drew some blood. It’s a shame that she can destroy anyone at will, but never aims at Romney. Romney is now using her (notice the softball he threw her) to split the conservative vote.

what a bunch of crybabies on this thread!

Succinct enough?

Look people, one of these candidates is going to win, God willing. Pick one, any one is better than Obama.

When the country doesn’t vote its racial guilt, it wants stupid, and votes for the clown it thinks not smarter than ourselves. Intellect makes us feel inadequate, uncomfortable, bad about ourselves. Reagan instinctively understood it, others have to play the part. Slick was smarter than he acted. That’s why Newt, the best of them without a question, ain’t got a chance. That’s why Bachmann has a big chance, as does Perry. Who knows, maybe the latter understands this and is consciously acting a bit slow, to be more like Double-ya.

I was a Cain fan long ago. Still have faith in him. However, I hope he gets more than the 999 thing going because I believe he has more depth than to keep talking about one solution to one of our many problems. He was a bit of a Johnny One Note tonight and I want to hear more from him. Our country sure needs a man with an analytical mind and problem solving skills who knows how to get people to work and get politicians to work together and put the pride back in our country again.

Newt Gingrich was brilliant and gets better all the time. His knowledge of our country, how it works, his experience with foreign affairs, and his no-nonsense/straightforward approach make him probably the best qualified of the contenders. I don't know if his past will haunt him, but I don't think he can sway the independent voters. Cain, I believe, can. Those two are my top picks for tonight and for the WH together, either for either position.

Don’t want to diss any of them becuase whoever gets the nomination I will vote for. But the only one with a chance of saving the nation from collapse is Newt. Newt is also fully vetted, what you see is what you get. Newts gop house saved the nation back in 95-96, now we are in even worse shape. So for me Newt is the man. I fully expect him to rise in the polls, every debate he out classes the field with his grasp of the problems their causes and the solutions. I also like that he wants to see Frank and Dodd in prison. I do too.

Romney is a strong candidate who could challenge for and win the nomination to be the candidate for POTUS of the democrat party. No doubt left in my mind that this guy is a liberal. He is not a RINO but a dyed in the wool liberal.

His brazen liberalism and the establishments support for this turd tells me that they clearly think the Tea Party is done. Well, I think we have a shock in store for Mittens.

Since there are no real debates any longer, I pay no attention to them. I am voting for Cain and I hope he wins the Nomination. Next in line would be Perry, he is still better than Romney, even with his illegals hang up.

Under no circumstances will I vote for Romney, Huntsman, Perry or Paul. The rest I am watching. When I decide, that is who I will vote for in the primary, but when the money bundlers put Romney or Huntsman on the ballot against Obama, I know Obama will win, so I will be writing in who I wanted to be there, just for my conscience.

Cain - Still trying to find something to get excited about - experienced leader, just not an experienced political leader. Since the president is the nominal head of the party, I'd have deep reservations about his abilities. Lots of Hope and Change, and that worked out really well last time... :( Might hold my nose and vote for him. I know he's a favorite around here, but we've had far too many years of amateur hour at the White House, we don't need more of it. MIGHT hold my nose and vote for him.

Perry - It's nice to know he can actually come to a debate and not shoot himself over and over again. Since I'm looking more towards a leader for the party as well as the nation, he finally did himself some good. Can support.

Romney - John McCain could really get behind him.. Which isn't saying much positive for him. Hated him before, still hate him now, so didn't make much difference. Would actively campaign against him if he won the nomination.

Newt - Very polished debater, though massively got the feeling he was there to appease himself, not others, which is typical Newt. Not going to win the nomination like Ron Paul, why either are there, who knows. MIGHT hold my nose and vote for him. Does have a clue about how this is a whole package - house, senate and white house should campaign as a single instrument. Would hold my nose and vote for him.

Bauchman - The Anti-Palin at this debate. Should be in a room with Newt and Paul so they can commiserate together about how they've been cheated. Would actively campaign against.

Paul -Even a broken clock can be right at least twice a day - doesn't mean you shouldn't get rid of it. Would actively campaign against.

Sanatorum - All those years living off the public’s dime debating in the senate has paid off... Now, can we strip away his looting of the public treasury for his ‘retirement’ and get him off the stage finally? MIGHT hold my nose and vote for him.

Overall, little change. Of the current field, I feel Perry's got the best shot, and has quite a few bones to pick with the RINO machine. Second would be Newt, distant third would be Cain and holding up someone’s rear is Sanatorum. Still don't know why Romney's not running for the Democrat nomination, what planet Paul comes from, but it's probably the same one Bauchman inhabits.

My opinion only ymmv:
Perry got no traction at a time he needed it most. Not a deathblow, but time’s a’wasting. He’s trending a nosedive.
Romney is treading water, wasn’t hurt but wasn’t helped. His faithful are committed but he gained nothing. I can’t support him.
Cain held his ground and that will likely be reflected in polls because he is surging and as long as he avoids land mines, that trend will continue. He’s the man to watch.
Bachmann wasn’t hurt, but is too low to matter without a knockout. Boring, bordering on trite.
Santorum is static. Brings nothing to the table.
Newt shows the most promise as the big brain, but its too little too late (probably by decades). He’ll survive the process, but won’t get the nomination. He may take the VP slot if Cain pulls it off.
Huntsman is on the wrong ticket and in the wrong weight class.
Paul is problematic. If I could take just what I admire and throw out the rest I’d still say maybe at best. As it stands he’s self-destructed by being Ron Paul.

Therefore, by process of elimination, Cain won hands down. The fact that he’s the new target shows I’m on the right track. He’s not the perfect, but he stands strong. It’s his to lose.
