Friends and fellow citizens,

If you'd be so kind as to give your honest assesment of the candidates tonight including who you can support and whom you cannot.

Please chime in. It'd be helpful to know what you all are thinking right about now. Kate

My take is virtually the same as yours.

However, nomination (not done until August of next year) will be judged on primary elections prior to, polling done mid next year... and, quite a bit on how much money front runners have, and to a smaller degree, how closely they tow the party line.

The old saying, 'Money is the mother's milk of politics' shouldn't be among the top criterion for voting for the nominee at the convention, but unfortunately it all too frequently is.

That said, Romney has quite a war-chest full of cash, and unless Perry can gain a bit better traction than he has at the moment, it will be hard for him to compete in coming months - and ~might~ cost him the nomination.

As I've posted elsewhere on FR pages, the rest of the candidates, other than Perry and Romney, aren't going anywhere - at this time. But - the public can change everything, simply through donations and getting out and working hard for a candidate that is behind the leaders.

It's far too early to tell how this will pan out - but you can bet on one thing for certain. The media hate GOP candidates - and will do anything in their power to derail the more conservative of them. Rick Perry is obviously their prime target, and has been since before he declared his candidacy.

There is one aspect of Cain's 999 plan not adequately explained?

He says it would do away with the payroll tax. If so, then does SS benefits paid out to recipients become all the same?

If yes, will it will then become regulated as just another welfare program?

I agree with you completely.

I think Perry did okay. There weren’t too many questions. I intend to continue supporting him. He did no harm and he can build on it.

I think Newt is worth his weight in gold and should be rewarded with an important cabinet post.

Romney never bothered me until Christie’s endorsement tonight. I just didn’t like that page in the playbook. Meaningless drama. Christie isn’t quite the legend he believes himself to be yet.

Santorum doesn’t like anything, does he?

Bachman feels herself slipping but I still think she’s an incredible achiever.

I feel fine about the people who have had the courage to run. I warmed to Cain a little.

I never thought about it that way, but I would say you are right,

Romney is smart, informed, experienced, disciplined, hardworking, and well-prepared. Too bad he’s an unprincipled, untrustworthy flip-flopper.

That is a succinct and perfect summary of Mitt. I've never hated Mitt. I respect the hell out of what he did to revive the 2002 Olympics. He's a smart guy, and clearly has prepared well. As you said, he has no core convictions and is not trustworthy....and never seems to build any meaningful political following.

He fell short in 2008 in a terrible field, and is hovering in the low 20s despite being the anointed front-runner. I think Romney got the MA governorship in a good time politically for the GOP and on the coat-tails of his Olympic fame. He performed at a level as governor that he didn't even bother to run for reelection. He would have lost. Why is our party pushing a failed one-term governor?

here are my thoughts:

Romney.. um.. good grief they gave him a lot of time to talk (it was like the Romney show), and can he TALK! lol just like a good used car salesman, you can’t get him to shut up! Romney is also playing the others like chumps, getting them to destroy each other and divide the conservative vote, leaving him a clear path to the nomination.

Perry - Actually did pretty good, and this is the first time I didn’t see him fade near the end. Maybe being able to sit helped since he’s had back surgery recently, it probably also helped that every single question wasn’t an attack on him and his record. But I feel that he sort of receeded into the background a bit, helped probably by the lack of questions he received.

Cain - hm.. well.. Cain got the spot light he’s been wanting... and... he fell short in my opinion. Nothing catastrophic, but 999 is not the solution to every problem in America. He took some major hits from Santorum and Bachmann (just as Perry had in previous debates), and he is starting to look a little shallow a one trick pony.

Santorum - actually did pretty darn good tonight, this is the first time I actually liked him, and I especially liked it when he talked about the American family.

Paul - same lovable nut as always.

Gingrich - WOW freaking W O W ! what in the world! seriously, that guy is smarter than all the rest of them put together! And unlike the rest of them, I think he could actually fix things. Even with all his baggage I think Gingrich would be the one I would want to be debating Obama. Having said that, I think Gingrich has about a 1% chance of winning, which is sad. Our country is worse off because people like Gingrich are not currently serving it in some capacity.

Bachman - had a decent night too, the first one in a LONG time (with a little help from Romney) and her little dig at cain’s 999 - 666 drew some blood. It’s a shame that she can destroy anyone at will, but never aims at Romney. Romney is now using her (notice the softball he threw her) to split the conservative vote.

"I really don’t think Newt can win the GOP nomination, nor do I think he’d beat Obama if he did."

But can he beat Hillary? I think that there is an excellent chance that Buckwheat will have a primary challenger- because of his poll standing, Fast and Furious, and Solyndragate. He might even pull an LBJ.

I doubt that Newt will last moneywise, same for Bachmann, Santorum and Huntsman (unless he gets support from daddy). Perry, Paul and Cain(?) might be able to hang in moneywise. Romney has a hard stop ceiling at about 25%, same as last primary. He has no support from Conservatives.

A Cain/Gingrich ticket would work for me. Santorum did himself some good tonight. Perry sucked pondwater. But all in all any person around that table tonight would be 1000% better than Barry Soetoro. They are all natural born citizens and concerned American patriots. Getting any of them elected in 2012 will be a victory.

It irritates me that the establishment and media always are out there with their picks instead of honest summation of each candidate (they don’t know the meaning of any words just listed above)...That the democrats want Mitt Romney should tell us everything about who NOT to vote for. Perry may not do great in debates, but his record for growth, conservatism, ISRAEL supporter, PRO LIFE, are what makes me back his candidacy. Newt supported Hillary and that whole global warming crap - that is NOT a conservative view - but, he is a sharp tool to have in the box.

And another thing - how about we get back to the Biblical basis for marriage 1 man, 1 woman and everyone else is just missing out on God’s blessings by choosing to continue in sin.

what a bunch of crybabies on this thread!

Succinct enough?

Look people, one of these candidates is going to win, God willing. Pick one, any one is better than Obama.

for the moment, I am still on the Perry train. He did good enough to keep me on board for the time being, especially since Cain fell a little flat which was the only viable alternative at the moment.

The race changes once again it seems!

lol

“Gingrich - WOW freaking W O W ! what in the world! seriously, that guy is smarter than all the rest of them put together!”

Gingrich is something of a political idiot savant. When he is hot he can tell the difference between the forest and the trees, and reference every root, twig, leaf and vein. When he is in a duh-wut phase he can’t tell the difference between a sequoia and broccoli. Brilliant, yes, but also unstable and unreliable.

Doesn’t matter. They can do this 10 more times.

I will vote for the most conservative candidate in the primaries and the republican candidate in the general. Which for me means, Bachmann, Cain or Santorum.

There is nothing else we can do at this point.

When the country doesn’t vote its racial guilt, it wants stupid, and votes for the clown it thinks not smarter than ourselves. Intellect makes us feel inadequate, uncomfortable, bad about ourselves. Reagan instinctively understood it, others have to play the part. Slick was smarter than he acted. That’s why Newt, the best of them without a question, ain’t got a chance. That’s why Bachmann has a big chance, as does Perry. Who knows, maybe the latter understands this and is consciously acting a bit slow, to be more like Double-ya.

I was a Cain fan long ago. Still have faith in him. However, I hope he gets more than the 999 thing going because I believe he has more depth than to keep talking about one solution to one of our many problems. He was a bit of a Johnny One Note tonight and I want to hear more from him. Our country sure needs a man with an analytical mind and problem solving skills who knows how to get people to work and get politicians to work together and put the pride back in our country again.

Newt Gingrich was brilliant and gets better all the time. His knowledge of our country, how it works, his experience with foreign affairs, and his no-nonsense/straightforward approach make him probably the best qualified of the contenders. I don't know if his past will haunt him, but I don't think he can sway the independent voters. Cain, I believe, can. Those two are my top picks for tonight and for the WH together, either for either position.
