Perry: We Don't Need to Elect the 'Smoothest Debater'
National Review ^ | Sept. 23, 2011 | Katrina Trinko

Posted on 09/23/2011 11:07:54 AM PDT by Clairity

In his CPAC speech today, Rick Perry came out swinging, criticizing Romneycare vigorously and stressing that there was no connection between good debating and good governing.

"As conservatives, we know that values and vision matter," Perry said. "It's not who is the slickest candidate or the smoothest debater that we need to elect. We need to elect the candidate with the best record and the best vision for this country."

Exactly so. We are not electing a "debate champion", but a President. Perry was given "gotcha" questions and the moderators avoided giving him questions where he could showcase his record and plans.

As a FReeper said, what we need is for Perry to do for the US what he did for Texas: low taxes, low regulation, business frienly climate, that results in job creation and economic growth.

lol. He would say that. It's not debating that is the issue. It's the ability to effectively communicate and sell your ideas.

And it's not either/or. A candidate should have a record, a vision, AND the ability to effectively express/sell that vision.

Perry's record isn't that great. His vision, what we know of it, is indistinguishable from the other candidates, and his ability to communicate is demonstrably weak.

Everyone is bashing Perry, because they try to pull him down, but remember he was down some 20 points behind Kay Baily Hutchinson and ended up beating her by a significant margin.

He is no quitter.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going, that’s Perry.

The Perry detractors would much prefer four more years of the Teleprompter Reader in Chief.

I give him a pass on being a lousy debater. I don’t give him a pass on being a demagogue with the immigration issue, and calling 95% of conservatives “heartless.”

Perhaps Perry can paraphrase Mark Twain: “The report of my political death was an exaggeration.”

We need to nominate an ADEQUATE debater.

In three attempts Perry has proven that he is not substantive on the issues, cannot think on his feet, and cannot string 3 coherent sentences together.

We thought we had a 21st Century Reagan, and what Perry has delivered is John McCain minus the mumbling.

This performance is unacceptable as the GOP nominee. The Dems and the MSM will tear him apart.

Any republican can do that. What we don't need is a president who thinks a border fence is over reacting and that we owe the illegal alien offspring an eduction.

We need to elect the best we can find for this country. A person that is against communism and socialism. We need to develop the attitude that we won’t accept just anyone to beat Obama.......we will only accept the best we can find to beat Obama. The best for the country, not the best for me, not you, not any other individual......but the best for the country and the future of our country.

After Sarah Palin flew down and bailed him out.

Yeah keep under estimating Perry.

I guess you will be voting for Obama or Romney.
The very same complaints against Perry were voiced against Sarah Palin in 2008. Perry has won 3 elections for Gov. and EVERY election the oposition claimed he soes lousey in debates. Yet when push comes to shove. Vote for a true Conservative or choose the Dum or RINO of your choice.

You can put lipstick on a Pig. It’s STILL a PIG.

The Perry detractors would much prefer four more years of the Teleprompter Reader in Chief.

The Perry 'detractors" are conservatives who see Perry for the charlatan that he obviously is. And to say we would prefer 4-more years of Obama is to be intellectually dishonest. We want a real conservative, not a Marxist liberal and certainly not a rerun of Juan McCain.
