In Manhattan, there is an obvious fault line that along 125th st....you can see it clearly where the trains come out of the tunnels and are elevated...

Only .6 of a mile deep....probably felt like more than a 5.9.
Prayers up for all going through this.
Living in So. Cal. experiencing an earthquake is not unusual but they are frightening. Don't believe anyone who says otherwise.

National cathedral reporting damage.
They better hope this isn't a foreshock of something to come.

You can search fault line maps and not find any on the east coast. That’s why we’re all freaking out.

Spotsylvania Lineament running right up through VA has long been suspected to be a buried "fossil" earthquake fault. The tremor today was right on the lineament.
There's a lot of interesting geology buried under miles of sediment in VA and NC. A bunch of terranes linked up here eons ago and the sutures are still down there. It looks like they are unquiet.

It is in the south east/south central area, SW of Trinidad, along the NM border. Along the Rio Grande Rift. East of the earthquake area is a large volcanic area, Raton east to Clayton. Some very impressive volcanoes along that drive.

Did not feel it in Atlanta GA. That sucks. I've always wanted to experience a fatal earthquake, tornado, or extraterrestrial invasion.Anything, actually, so long as it's fatal.
All you have to do is wait.

Felt it in CLEVELAND!
So did we. Heard a news report that Progressive Field (Indians game) felt it. My wife noticed it while I was working underneath the car (good thing it wasn't too big).

Another factor that contributes to being felt over a large area is that the substrate is granite. I didn’t feel this quake (in Maine), but we’ve felt some that were centered hundreds of miles away.

The heat and humidity this summer has been absolutely BRUTAL, and I say that as a NC native.
I have never seen it this bad here, actually.
To: newnhdad
Well, it was a shock wave from the energy released from an earthquake fault line breaking free. The chances of a fault line going down your specific street are very low.
I only say that so that you won’t think your home may have been a bad purchase.
This was probably what you were thinking anyway, even though your terminology made it seem different.
Hope you didn’t have any damage.

Not a warning, just the good Lord trying to give us some shovel ready jobs.
