A Republican aide e-mails me: The Speaker, Sen. Reid and Sen. McConnell all agreed on the general framework of a two-part plan. A short-term increase (with cuts greater than the increase), combined with a committee to find long-term savings before the rest of the increase would be considered. Sen. Reid took the bipartisan plan to the White House and the President said no.

I think that a well-orchestrated, GOP plan could pass BOTH houses of Congress...and possibly even be engineered for an override of Obama’s veto.
Make the bastard irrelevant, I say.
What is really bothering me is 75% of the people (CNN poll even) support a balanced budget amendment, and they also support by close to that amount term limits on the legislative branch.
There are currently what, 29 Republican governors, and at least as many upper and lower houses in the states? Can’t they put together enough moderate Democrat governors and legislatures to call for a Constitutional Convention and let the 50 states decide? This way they can put it to all the states to ratify, completely bypassing both the executive and legislative branches at the federal level.
The states have true power in this process, and they are the ones having it taken by Washington every day. It will only take 3/4 of the states to ratify this, I can’t believe that this can’t get done with the turmoil in Washington right now, its not even being talked about!!
Put a smackdown on both parties at the federal level and especially the president. Put a balanced budget amendment and a term limits amendment up for vote, its what the people want. Washington refuses to limit themselves and the states will go down right along with Washington, even the ones working their asses off to remain in the black and be fiscally responsible are getting hurt big-time by Obama.
Term limits should be 6 in the house and 2 in the senate lifetime, IMHO.
Don't negotiate with a mad man. Obama has some of the same metal issues that my mother has. Once they crack, they will destroy everything rather than concede a point.
Yup. They’re also starting to count how many people have been tossed under the bus by this administration, people that they considered untouchable...
When Boehner doesn't go far enough to the right, we threaten to take his power away from him.
When Obama doesn't go far enough left, they assume he doesn't have enough power.
See all the "Super Congress" and "14th amendment means debt limit not real" stuff. Anything it takes.
They are effectively unconstrained by elections and the Constitution. Hard to win at chess when the other player is smashing your pieces with a hammer. Theyve even started trying to cover Gunwalker.
They're just trying to get the right angle, like the lone defensive back's last ditch attempt to stop a wide receiver on an open field.
The Cut Cap and Balance bill is still on the table in the Senate.
They should get it on the floor, debate and vote on it, and send it to the president. There has been enough negotiating.
If he fails to sign it, go for a veto overide and stick it to him.
I agree and somewhere deep down in my gut...I pray that is what the saner leaders of both parties of the House & Senate are planning.
It is my firm belief 0bama will say veto to anything they put in front of him as a proposal. He can play “present” all day long this way.
They need to put legislation in front of him. Then he has to sign it or veto it.
It is the only way forward. They must stop debating with the White House. The White House is a separate branch of government.
Only if the people and banks believe that. They don't. Our economy is stuck on "Lets pretend", and making real cuts would expose just how messed up the game is. Rather than do that, they will keep playing till it all falls apart.
The GOP didn't play this very well, and the NEED a psychiatrist on staff to help them predict how Obama will react. If he has narcissistic disorder, this is going to end very badly.
We really, really, really, really, really do not want a Constitutional Convention right now. What comes out of that given the current makeups of the states and likely delegates, would be the addition of several ‘rights’ and the loss of things like your right to keep and bear arms.
Rumors, rumors and more rumors. Believe nothing you hear/read without a creditable source.
Per DU, they're not. The "savings" are a combination of slower growth rates and ending wars in Afg and Irq. Nothing real.
This goes nowhere.
You need to understand basic facts, which it appears you don’t have in mind.
The cut, cap and balance bill that passed the House and was killed in the Senate, also raised the debt ceiling.
You in effect are demanding no increase in any bill going forward, when the GOP controlled House already raised the debt ceiling in the same bill in which it cut and capped spending going forward, and proposed a constitutional balanced budget amendment.
I am amazed at how many FReepers don’t know this.
The correct response to that would be to force the other player to play by the rules. Anyone in either body suggesting such things should be censured at least and preferably ejected by the rules. More importantly, the ethics enforcers should be ruthless but fair in enforcing the rules.
However, the Republicans (like the Dems) have too many skeletons in their closets and don’t want the same things applied to them. The problem is that the Dems take advantage of this and run roughshod over the rules since they don’t have any consequences attached - and they feel any publicity is good publicity. The Republicans still feel shame, so they don’t take advantage of it because they fear public exposure.
So Boehner has to control the headlines from the Lame Stream Media, or he’s played for a fool??
That’s a no win, eh?
The day Boehner can control the headlines of the LSM, that’s the day pigs will sprout wings and fly to Mars.
LOL
Cut Cap Balance wasn’t “killed” in the Senate - it was tabled. It’s not dead.
Per DeMint, it will rise again.
The House should send this deal that Reid agreed to, on to the Senate, then leave town.
Obama has the Gang of Six in his pocket to fall back on. Knowing that is why he upped the ante to Boehner. He KNEW Boehner would have to walk out as Boehner couldn’t possibly agree to anything with MORE tax hikes than had already been publically disclosed.
That’s why Obama already had his 30 minute tirade composed and on the teleprompted an hour after Boehner walked out. It was written the night before.
Obama has played the republicans in the Gang of Six like a finely tuned fiddle. Personally, I think those three ought to be horsewhipped.
excellent
and as we have seen from the way barky and his legion rammed through legislation since 2009, it only takes one democrat senator to make it “bipartisan”
“Is there no one? Is there no one else?”
But, but, but ... I thought the Republicans were the "Party of No"? How can it be Obama who is saying no? /s See: http://my.democrats.org/page/content/partyofno
