The number of Americans who believe the country is on the wrong track rose to 63 percent this month, up from 60 percent in June, with stubbornly high unemployment and prolonged gridlock in Washington dashing hopes of a swift economic recovery.
But voters do not appear to be holding President Barack Obama responsible for the problems so far. Obama's approval rating held relatively steady at 49 percent, down 1 percentage point from June. His approval rating among independents -- a group Obama needs to win re-election -- fell to 39 percent from 44 percent.
Obama's standing could deteriorate quickly if the economy does not begin to generate jobs and if Washington cannot show it is capable of solving problems, Ipsos pollster Julie Clark said.
"If those things don't happen, Obama will be in for a real challenge in getting re-elected next year," Clark said.
Obama and Republicans have hit an impasse in negotiations to raise America's borrowing limit before the government runs out of money to pay all of its bills on August 2. That could force the government to try to prioritize its payments.
Asked what bills the government should stop paying if the debt limit is not raised, 36 percent listed international creditors like banks and 12 percent listed government departments like agriculture and education.
The sputtering economy and high unemployment are certain to dominate the race for the White House in 2012, and the Republican candidates for the nomination to challenge Obama repeatedly have criticized his economic leadership.
ROMNEY EASILY LEADS BACHMANN
In a head-to-head matchup of the two top declared Republican challengers, Mitt Romney easily leads Michele Bachmann, 40 percent to 23 percent, the poll found.
Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, leads most national polls of the Republican race but Bachmann, a U

What is wrong with people? I mean, honestly, why would anyone vote for this incompetent jerk?
I have yet to find someone who support Romney.
That poll oversamples Democrats Avg: 52% dems, 38% repubs, rest are independents.
Left wing Reuters poll taken among adults AND on a weekend
Plus the demographics are wildly skewed vs Gallups latest breakdown of registered Rep/Dems/Ind.
And with all that he manages just a 49% approval rating
I agree 100%.
I think Mitty's support is media based.
I do believe Dems will go strong for Mitty in open Repub primaries as a reverse "Op Chaos".
Since most legitimate polling now finds Obama and the Dems trailing rep in who the public trusts more to right the economy this is a bogus extrapolation of the numbers.
Most people when asked about Obama will use their feelings of him PERSONALLY (don’t ask) as an answer to how he is doing his job. Most of those favorable responses come from many people being intimidated against making any negative responses against him for fear of being thought of as a racist.
My guess is were this clown a white man his approval numbers would be in the very low 40’s or high 30’s and if he were a Rep, white man they would be in the low 20’s.
Several generations of leftist product from the public school system with no self respect. What percentage of the population pays no Federal Income Tax? What percentage of people receive some form of public assistance? They have been bought and paid for by Obama.
Here's what you have to understand. Obama's approval dropped only one percent but his approval rating among independants fell a full five percent. So either Reuters found more Republicans who think Obama is doing a great job or they oversampled Democrats in order to get the results.
And if they oversampled Democrats and the "wrong track" number STILL went down three points, what does that tell you about how bad the economy is really headed?
lol. I know! It would be comical if it wasnt so freakin sad. Who likes this guy? Amazing!!!
It’s been 2.5 years, and we are truly F***ed. Everyone knows it. There will be no way out until we have bounced 0bama, Bernanke, Fannie, Freddie, and Reid.
That’s gonna be a long long time folks. Keep those vegetable beds productive. Gonna need food and bullets.
The economy will not improve until he is out of office.
I think Obungo’s numbers will seriously erode as we get into next year. Unemployment will still be above 9% and we will be in the middle of the second leg down of this ‘recession’.
God help us all the next few years. The meager cuts being made by the House are not even a blip on what is needed.

This poll must have over-sampled Rats by about 15% to get Obama’s overall so high.
I know a few. They think they are being “practical”.
This statement is proof that they oversampled Rats.
