WASHINGTON (AP) The White House said Monday that a "significant" deal with Republicans on cutting government spending and raising the nation's debt limit is still possible, even as the administration hardened its stance on the need for increased tax revenue to be part of any agreement. President Barack Obama made his first direct foray into the deficit negotiations Monday. He met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the Oval Office for about 30 minutes Monday morning, and planned to meet with Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell in the early evening. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama's meeting with Reid was "constructive" and the president concluded that there are still opportunities for a deal to be reached. But he said the only way to achieve that objective would be to include tax increases or the elimination of tax breaks for big companies and wealthy individuals.
"It's the only way to get it done," Carney said. The White House has proposed raising about $600 billion in new tax revenue, including ending subsidies to oil and gas companies, an idea that failed in the Senate.

Not just farm subsidies but all corporate subsidies. Like the Market Promotion Program
Most of them don’t make enough to count.
I would loved to see our side, if congressional R’s are on our side, finally just say, “We can no longer negotiate with this administration in good faith.” Make the divide, which is already huge, more visible. The problem is the divide is not very wide in D.C.
Also a lot of people here believe it..
I’d vote for every single one of those...just to see the anguish and lashing out from the left.
If we ended the income tax and replaced it with the Fair Tax, the only people out of a job would be the IRS and the thousands of tax accountants.
cut the waist...
cut the government fat...
sure why not...great pun on words!
Senate Republicans have NO SPINE. Mitch will rollover. He should send DeMint over to take care of business
That’s just wrong on so many levels. What a freak!

IDIOTS!
How about ending subsidies to ‘green’ energy which does absolutely nothing to help the economy or produce energy for consumption.
A lot dorks here believe anything that comes from this White House.. So Sad So sad.
The bigger issue - this is his first foray into the budget talks? Where the —— has he been? The biggest issue facing the country, killing job creation and this is his first foray!
Ridiculous BS!!!
Higher taxes are inevitable. We’ve reached the point of no return on that one sadly. BUT, no new taxes until they make massive cuts in spending.
When the House says “No” its “No”!
Not a bad suggestion. We should burn his phone lines and tell him that.
And what is your rational that there be higher taxes? Because you want to spend money you don't have? Did you have a mortgage you could not afford? have you been bankrupt? Yours is the type of thinking that has caused those events to take place.
Give me a break. DUmbkoff (with the emphasis on the DU).
Nice. Our deficits are so high I don’t see a way out that is politically feasible. Ideologically, I agree with you, but I don’t think it’s possible in this environment. I see our country crashing and burning due to our deficits and we need to shore up our finances using ALL methods.

You’re either an idiot, or a plant.
Higher taxes will devastate our industrial production, small business (which is responsible for close to 90% of our jobs), and our economy.
We need a two year tax holiday to stimulate the economy, and the total repeal of Obamacare for starters. A repeal of all union protections is absolutely mandatory also.

The way out is to repeal the congressional acts that created the spending. Now!
