The Met Police is fighting a legal battle to keep files detailing the investigation into the notorious Jack the Ripper case secret - to maintain confidentiality for Victorian 'supergrasses'.
The documents are said to include four new suspects for the serial killings which terrorised Whitechapel in 1888 and have become one of the world's most infamous unsolved cases.
The historic ledgers have 36,000 entries detailing police interaction with informants between 1888 to 1912.
However, Scotland Yard reportedly believes disclosing the names could hinder recruiting and gathering information from modern informants, affecting terrorism investigations - and even lead to the Victorians' relatives being attacked.
Author and former police officer, Trevor Marriott, has tried for three years to see uncensored versions of the documents.
He has previously applied under the Freedom of Information Act and, when that was refused, he appealed to the Information Commissioner, which also rejected his attempt.
He has now appealed to the Information Tribunal, which is expected to release its decision later this year.

Oh goodness gracious it was ages ago. The case is historical and they really should release the files. I’ll bet they don’t want to look like fools for a poor investigation, or perhaps the way some people were written about (class lines).
“hundreds of years old”
Interesting comment. I met someone who had been physically close to Clinton once. Said the aura was of a feeling of real evil.
I wondered what he meant, until I actually saw the shadow/spirit of a snake crawl up someone’s torso one time. Changed me a whole lot, as I really didn’t think any of that was possible.
I see people very differently now. Like a positive/negative magnet sort of thing we all did as kids.
My only goodhearted prayer for Ubama is that the Lord Jesus Christ visit him personally, right there in the White House. They could all use a visitation.
The area by the way was ‘Flower and Dean Street’ and its immediate surroundings. Two of the five ‘canonical victims’ also lived in that street and it lies roughly at the centre of the murder sites.
My thoughts as well. But really, investigators screw up all the time, so would anybody really be that surprised if that had happened with this case as well?
Interestingly, Whitechapel today is Muslim, and they’re threatening women and gays, and defacing advertising that depicts women.

My grandfather came to this country three years before the Wright brothers flew their first plane...and went straight into the PA coalmines.
Police basically relied on witnesses to catch anyone.
I think Jack-the-Ripper was an Arab diplomat, maybe from Lebanon or Egypt. His behavior would be in line with what we see from Muslim sheiks but embarrassing to the Al-Fayads types who own Harrods and now half of England.
This sort of lends credence to the idea.
Cheers!
Have you read her book?
She made an interesting observation: Walter R. Sickert was, besides an artist, an actor. He frequently traveled with various acting troupes throughout the British Isles. Some of the Ripper letters are sent from various locations around the nation, places where Sickert was acting at the time, and contain details only the Ripper would know (Cornwell claims to have authenticated most of the dates and locales).
The murders stopped when Sickert moved to France, which I find damning.
I’m not particularly interested in the Ripper case and cannot understand the British authorities refusal to open up their files. Unless, of course, they’ve been threatened with lawsuits by surviving family of the murderer which really points at that person’s guilt. (Sickert’s family has threatened such lawsuits, or so I read.)
Most definitely. Not everybody can be a Holmes or a Marple lol
Big problem with that idea - there were no Arab diplomats in the UK in the 1880s. Britain simply did not exchange diplomats with the Middle Eastern nations. There were some Muslims (the first Mosque in the UK seems to have opened around 1886) but it was a small number and they were mostly from India and surrounding nations.
She told me who was accepted as common knowledge as to who the killer was - and yes, she said it was a Lord. I've forgotten the name.
She said Queen Victoria was well aware of who it was.
But this would be far more believable as to why they want to ‘protect’ living descendants. they have a point. Descendants today had no part in it nor in the cover up. But even here, tonight, we'll see slurs against the Royals.
It's rather like the case of Dr. Mudd, whose life was ruined He patched up John Wilkes Booth broken leg, having no way of knowing yet that Lincoln had been killed or that this man was the killer...he just set a broken leg of an injured man.
But he was vilified and his family for generations after - their 'name was mud!" . It wasn't until a few years ago that he was granted a 'pardon' as innocent.
Even HAD he been guilty - why should people crucify his family even to generations long after?
People can be nasty. And if Jack the Ripper is finally revealed to have been a member of the Royal family, people today, and some in here - oh yes! - will vilify today's Royals, over a hundred years later.
Yes, I have. I take a keen interest in the Ripper case, and while I haven't read everything written on it, a major book by a major writer did get my attention.

She claims a lot of things that other researchers believe can't be claimed, and can even be shown to be wrong. She also assumes nearly all the Ripper letters were genuine, where again, most researchers believe the vast majority were fakes, and in fact, only one or two are given any credence at all by most experts (the Lusk letter being one of those few examples).
Portrait of a Killer Patricia Cornwell and Walter Sickert: A Primer
has a detailed analysis of Cornwell's claims by a Ripper expert.
The murders stopped when Sickert moved to France, which I find damning.
When Cornwell claims Sickert moved to France - something that can't be proven, although there is evidence to suggest it. Nowhere near as much as she claims though.
Or maybe Jack the Ripper was working in Scotland Yard. Interestly, there are 2 NYPD guys being looked at for the current crop of bodies showing up on the beaches of Long Island.
Still secret after all these years, eh.
Oh for sure.
“The only harm by releasing information today would be to an institution. The royal family is Britain’s number one institution.”
But the Met Police’s number one institution is the Met Police. I suspect they are covering up botching the case in one way or another.
Yeah the famous Brick Lane is in White Chapel.
