Gov. Rick Scott has turned down more than $2 billion in federal money for a high-speed rail project that would link Tampa and Orlando.

"The truth is that this project would be far too costly to taxpayers and I believe the risk far outweighs the benefits,'' Scott said this morning in a release announcing his decision to turn down the rail money.

Scott said he weighed three main points in deciding to turn down the money:

After reviewing a cost analysis for the Wisconsin HSR, Florida expected the costs to be somewhere in the $80 to $100 range. Oh, and the little tiny $3 billion dollar price to be paid back to the Feds.

“WISN 12 News obtained a copy of the Wisconsin DOT federal grant application. The DOT estimated one-way tickets to Madison would range from $22 to $33. But, the conservative Cato Institute calculated the cost to taxpayers would be much higher with a $68 per ticket subsidy, bringing the real cost of a one-way high-speed ticket to nearly a $100.”

This is great news. Good for Governor Scott.

According to this article he is getting a lot of heat for this decision.

I just used the contact form below to express my support for this decision.

Whatever happened to Willie? I kinda miss his nonsense.

p.s. a quick search finds he was banned after preaching to Jim R.

Yep, he talked his way into a zot on that thread.

It was fun to watch, like a slow motion train wreck arguing with Jim. It wasn’t like he didn’t know it was coming either. I kind of miss him though, watching him trying to defend his choo-choo threads while being smacked down continuously was certainly entertaining.

I suppose a good chunk of the other $0.22 goes to pay for the military and a whole bunch of bloated govt. salaries.

“BUT liberal states like California are just taking the funds to further fund their projects. So instead of the money being saved.. it’s just being spent elsewhere. “

NOT TRUE! The California rail plan is in deep trouble also!

Interesting. Not sure. I am under the impression that’s allocated per capita into the .78. The .22 is presumably going to other states, not a communal pot. That’s why the states with net debits equal states with net credits but I’ll double check.

Gov.Rick Scott turns down more than 2 Billion Federal Money for a high speed rail between Tampa and Disney World. Is it not amazing where the fed gov. places it’s importance on spending when at the same time our economy is going under? Thank You Gov. Rick Scott for your refusal to put our grand kids further in debt.

To drive from Tampa to Orlando it is approximately 85 miles and 90 minutes, mostly highway. I don’t see anyone taking a train such a distance. If you can’t drive or don’t have a car I’m assuming bus service runs between those two cities.

No way to recoup the 2.7 billion plus 3 billion FL would have to put in to maybe make this thing work. If Amtrak can’t make money running their Acela train from Boston to DC, no way this little 80 mile run will ever be profitable.

Sadly, yes. Why do we need high-speed rail? Just so we can be like the Chinese?

Agreed! At last someone who doesn’t think “Hey, Let’s build a TRAIN!” or “Hey, let’s build a STADIUM!” will solve a state’s economic woes:)

No kidding! The Stadium in Orlando that hosts the Magic have had one booking so far. Barry Manilow for a one night performance. That monster is really paying for itself. Also, the proposed new performing arts center hasn’t raised enough private money either. The new County Mayor is trying to postpone it but “Buddy” Dyer of course wants to build his legacy and leave Orange County with the bills. Glad I live elsewhere.
