From FOX:
DEVELOPING: Loud explosions and gunfire were heard in the Egyptian capital of Cairo Friday, as protesters demanding the removal of President Hosni Mubarak defied a curfew, Al Jazeera reported. Egyptian television reports the ruling party headquarters in Cairo are on fire.
From TWITTER:
WashingtonPost: Clinton: We urge #Egypt authorities to allow peaceful protest, reverse unprecedented steps it has taken to cut off communications less than 20 seconds ago
Santayana was right.
I’m shocked.
Thank you for that post. You summed it well.
You just can’t keep propping up dictators and expect it not to backfire.
I distinctly remember Dubya trying desperately to get free elections in Egypt and Muburak flipped him the bird.
Further, I’m not at all convinced that the vast bulk of those rioters are necessarily Muslim extremists but I do think the more powerful are. I truly think a lot of those rioters want freedom from this awful Muburak and maybe can’t see the morrow, which might be worse.
I for sure don’t have the answers but really, we are all Americans here. I daresay not a single one of us would have suffered such an awful person as Muburak for now going on three decades, without riotiing ourselves.
I’m still on the side of the Egyptian people because they’re doing what people do once some nasty piece of work has dominated and ruled them for too long.
American propped up the Muburak regime for too long, the Dems didn’t help Bush in throwing him over, and it’s silly to think people are going to put up with this forever. The mileage might vary. Americans might tolerate this for a couple of years, Egyptians take a bit longer. But one person is just NOT going to be in charge of so many people forever.
And the Shah of Iran, as I understand it, was no Mr. Nice Guy either. He’s painted as a “benovolent dictator” but I’ve read he was questionable.
When one person gets too much power they become oblivious to the needs of those they govern. It’s the nature of us.
I know the Shah, and now Muburak, were and will probably be replaced by something worse, but it’s hard as hell for me to champion that awful man to remain in charge.
Although Biden does say Muburak is NOT a dictator and who am I to argue with Biden?
After all, Muburak won by some 96% in the last Egyptian election.
Why yes, yes it is...
Without Congressional approval OR judicial review, to boot.
So, you prefer their peace treaty with Israel broken?
Please don’t be confused to think this is merely a popular uprising. Popular uprisings take place spontaneously by different factions in different nations.
What we are seeing is a concerted effort to install violent sharia law by a violent Islamic group, across national borders.
If you think what is taking place now will be productive, take a long look at Iran. Think about it! What makes this any different?
Don’t go Jimmy Carter on us...
Incredible scenes on tv of the military basically joining the protesters....
I think that we are seriously looking at the possiblity of a Islamic Confederation of states streaching from Algeria to Lebanon that will shake the Saudi throne. This will only give Iran more power.
And the dominoes won’t stop in North Africa. Southern Europe will be overwhelm by a Tsunami of refugees trying to escape.
Thanks, Mom.
1. Mubaraks party HQ in flames.

Hillary Clinton/Obama BLEW it just now, what the hell was she thinking?
Reminds me of the scene in Dr. Zhivago when the soldiers turn on the Generals.
Ideology is a very strong drug, Miz.... folks tend to forget that actions have consequences, and that it is dangerous to ignore the Law of Unintended Consequences.
I agree with you, that this is probably the start of something very unpleasant. If we've had any good luck here at all, though, it's that the W. administration was far-sighted enough to begin dealing with Islamism back in 2001; and to recognize the strategic advantages of establishing a significant armed presence in the Middle East.
Another good piece of luck, is that a lot of the people in the "Islamic" countries in the Mediterranean region are actually quite westernized -- they won't fit comfortably within the Islamic regimes.
CNN’s Nick Roberts is reporting the Army is joining the protesters now. The end may be close.
Folks, please...
This is Iran all over again, and in five nations that are friendly with the West. Do you not see a pattern here?
No Mubarak isn’t perfection, be there are worse things out there.
You are pleading Jimmy Carter’s old case from the 70s. That’s a massive mistake.
I expect the NYSE to plummet very soon.
LOL if you really thought Egypt under Mubarak was one of Israel’s “enemies”
The people looking to take over Egypt consider the ‘73 war as unfinished business, and they are gonna need jobs and a unifying cause for tens of millions of Egyptians to keep themselves in power
Didn’t this WH just give Egypt the OK for a huge defense contract a few months ago?
thats nothing, jesus.....AlJazeera now reporting Army and Police fighting each other and clashing in Cairo.
