Wilmington, Delaware (CNN) -- Police have found homicide victim John Wheeler's cell phone, according to a taxi driver who was interviewed by investigators this week.

Athel Scott told CNN National Correspondent Susan Candiotti that police told him they found the cab driver's number in the phone of Wheeler, the former Pentagon official who was found dead in a Delaware landfill. He said investigators wanted to know how his number got there. Scott... says he told the police he didn't have any idea.

"I never got a call from the man. I don't know him... He's never been in my cab. I don't know how my number got in his cellphone," Scott says he told police...

Yes.

Phoebe Dill, a friend and neighbor of Wheeler and his wife, Katherine Klyce, in New Castle, Del., said she last saw Wheeler on Christmas Eve when her husband, Robert, drove him to the train station.

“He was going to New York with his wife’s Christmas present,” she said. Wheeler and Klyce have a condominium in Manhattan.

RE:
ca. Dec. 23-27

Neighbors knew he was gone over Christmas...Comment was “thought he had come back early”.

So they were expecting him...I’d move the date to 26-28th

It is strange. And that screen shot is from only 2 or 3 seconds of video of him in the actual parking area of the garage. I can’t remember ever seeing that particular footage anywhere else, only the CBS affiliate in Philly.

heck out his head. Is there any sign of head injury. His bald head certainly helps with this part of the investigation.

It's 3:30 PM on December 29th. John had spent the last couple of hours getting ready for his next "Mission" in Philadelphia. He checks all the doors at the New Castle residence and leaves on the 10 minute walk to The River Plaza Shopping Center.

Please remember that man has to eat, sleep, brush his teeth, shave, bathe, change his clothes, have his coffee and watch the news. Additionally, he has to return calls, prepare work data, pay bills, go to the bank, go to the cleaners. Effectively, John is a bachelor. He's dedicated his life to his country.

His marriage??

But back to 3:30 PM on the 29th.

John walks the 10 minutes to the River Plaza Shopping Center. The Wilmington Trust Bank is right next door to the Walgreen's Pharmacy. He withdraws cash at the ATM. There is also a dry cleaners and he drops off some laundry. There is also a Deli and a Restaurant. He grabs a coffee and sandwich and makes a call to a cab company. The driver says he'll be there in 20 minutes but when he gets there...no John.

I BELIEVE THAT CABBIE LIED. He was the manager and a driver that day...He wanted that big, fat fare to Philly and the big fat tip that went with it. The cabbie had to get someone to come in so he could go himself. It was an hour before he got there. By that time, (6:00 PM) John had gone to the Pharmacy and asked for a ride (shift change) to Wilmington where he knew he could easily get a cab. The Pharmacist offered to call a cab and John walked out....he had just dealt with cab gig without success.....

John was now off his schedule but if he could get to Wilmington, he could grab a cab or train to Philly and still make his meeting on the 30th.

We're assuming it was a meeting in Philly. It may have been an invitation to a Army Football gathering. Except he said his briefcase was stolen. Maybe he uses it as a carry all???

It's only about 6 miles...He could walk it...but it was kinda cold....His original intention was NOT to walk...

So what are the options...Walk, bus, hitch, cab

We know he was robbed...But he also won the battle...and made it to Wilmington.

The time frame between the Pharmacy and Wilmington is only 40 minutes....so he didn't walk all the way...unless he runs track...

Oh, no....this is turning into an algebra problem.

Thank you much....but notice that he never touches the door and his shoe is in his left hand so he's not even positioned to open the door. Also notice that the door's location would make it an exit door.

I'd say the door being open was not because of John...and he was doing the attendant a favor....

I might be wrong...but take another look and see what you think...

I agree...26, 27, 28....

Radio/TV + boots = contractor doing repairs or maintenance for John. John gave him a key.

I left off in Part 2 with John walking out of the Pharmacy. His immediate goal was now Wilmington...about 8 miles away.

So, it's an absolute that John had a ride...Because it takes about 15 minutes to walk a mile...

And it looks like timewise, he would have gotten the ride almost immediately.

It’s a thought...But John has probably been using a local handyman for years.

I’m not familiar with the exact type of truck that was used for refuse collection but have you considered the possibility of Wheeler’s body being stuffed into the garbage truck in between stops. Is it a possibility?

I wonder if he may have had a lady friend, or two where he could have changed clothes while they were at work. These ladies might be very reluctant to call the cops with any info they have and get their names into the homicide investigation.

I don't think any friend of John's ...man, woman....would hesitate to get involved. I'd rather come forward then anticipate LE at my door every time I heard a knock on the door.

The hardest thing is getting a "witness" to a crime to come forward. Do you risk your life, your family, your future for a man you don't know and who is already dead??

Wheeler was so far above my pay grade that I wouldn’t think twice about not coming forward. There’s no way I would endanger my family defending bureaucrats at that level of government.

Cabbie #2 - someone transcribed his interviews #1 and #2.

What stuck out is:

Most of the time I like to write down once I arrive you know um the time I drop them off and the fare that they paid.

1st interview, retracing route. Fare shown on meter when he says 'This is where dropped off' is $6.55. And interview trip possibly at busier traffic time. So where did Wheeler's trip come to $9 - $10? At a very slow traffic time. Some side detour, or mis-recollection....

Also 1st interview: [paraphrase] '10th-Orange - 11th-Orange...route all of us take to Hotel Dupont area or any other buildings in that vicinity.' 2nd interview: very specific that Wheeler said to Hotel Dupont.
