TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran on Wednesday hanged a former soccer player's mistress known as a "temporary wife who was convicted of murdering her love rival in a case that captivated the Iranian public for several years.
Shahla Jahed was hanged at dawn, after spending more than eight years in jail for the slaying of the player's wife, the official IRNA news agency reported.
Jahed had become what is known as a "temporary wife" of former soccer star Nasser Mohammad Khani. She was charged in 2002 with stabbing his wife, Laleh Saharkhizan, to death and convicted of murder in 2004 and again in 2009, after her appeal was denied.
Contracts with "temporary wives" are a legal way for Iranian men to have mistresses outside marriage, with the agreements lasting from between several hours to a few years.

This is Iran, so there is little doubt that she was actually innocent.

Jahed tearfully prayed and shouted for her life to be spared before her son pulled the chair she was standing on as Khani watched. Her son pulled the chair?
If she was on a chair she probably didn't free fall fast enough to break her neck, she probably strangled to death.

I have never understood the left's reflexive defense of countries like Iran, especially in comparison to Israel.
Israel, in many ways, is a leftist's dream - universal health care, massive "social safety net", conventionally liberal court system (haven't executed but two people in 50+ years), etc. Iran, OTOH, makes the pre-Colonial puritans seem like progressives. Iran is about as backward thinking on social issues as you can get. And yet, their biggest defenders are "social issue champions". It's cognitive dissonance, in the extreme.

All their hangings are slow strangulation.

The victim's son pulled the chair from under her feet as Jahed gasped for breath in the remaining moments of her life, the khabaronline.ir news website said. The former soccer striker, Khani, also attended the hanging. No, it was the victim's son and with the gasping, you are correct ... she was strangled rather than hung, which when properly done breaks the neck.

The article says “before the victim’s son pulled the chair” so I think it was the son of the woman she was accused of killing.

"If she was on a chair she probably didn't free fall fast enough to break her neck, she probably strangled to death." That's SOP in Iran. Typically, they use cranes and slowly raise the person from the ground...
