ISTANBUL, Turkey, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- An ancient city in Turkey's Aegean area will be covered with sand instead of silt and clay then inundated with reservoir water from a new dam, officials say.
Environmentalists say the decision to use sand to cover the ancient city of Alliaonoi will mean the ultimate destruction of an architectural treasure, Hurriet Daily News reported Friday.
Despite efforts by environmentalists, a Turkish preservation board said sand would be used to cover the city before waters from the Yortanli Dam flood the region.
The Allianoi Initiative, spearheading a legal fight against the construction of the dam, objected to the new ruling. The group contends it will bury a rich repository of history and the sand cover will not be enough to protect the important ancient site.
The decision was a surprise, a lawyer for the initiative said, adding the group would immediately go to court to stop the sand-filling.
Allianoi, a hot springs settlement of the Roman Empire during the second century A.D., sits on the flood plain of the Bergama Yortali Dam, which environmentalists have been fighting since 1993, Hurriet reported.
An outrage-—they should not be allowed to destroy a precious historic treasure.
Allianoi, a hot springs settlement of the Roman Empire during the second century A.D., is irreplaceable.
Just Muslims being Muslim. Nothing new here.
Right, it's connected to those "infidels" in the Holy Roman Empire.
Islam is an evil cult that obliterates the histories of other cultures and religions. Whether the Buddhas in Afghanistan, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, or a Roman ruin in Turkey, this is what these savages do.
Well, DAM
Why did Alliaonoi get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks.
If there is human civilization in a thousand years, they will rediscover and excivate this area.

All of Turkey is covered in historical artifacts. Nothing could ever get done!

Actually all of Turkey has buried its historic treasures and the human skeletons of its original inhabitants in its demented frenzied muslim attempt to destroy its past.
Turks have shown again and again that they do not belong to the civilized races and should leave and get out and go back to the Asian steppes from whence they came.
First they innundated the Aswan artifacts, but I said nothing since I wasn’t an Asawanian
Then they innundated the Allianoi Hot Springs, but i said nothing because my Hot Springs are half a world away.
When they came to innundate the ApplegateRanch...
...I shot the living H___ out of them!
Sadly no. Islam will win and in 1000 years, if the Lord tarries, all OUR history will be forgotten and our great great great x100 grand children will know only what the Caliphs tell them.
Your own fault, you shouldn’t have said “dam” so many times.

Ancient city does not actually exist, says Turkish ministerControversy over plans to bury an ancient city in western Turkey with sand ahead of a new dam project was overshadowed Wednesday by revelations from Turkey's environment minister that the site did not, in fact, exist. "There is no such place as Allianoi. It is just a hot spring that was recently restored..." said Minister Veysel EroGlu in response to a reporter's question about the controversial plans to bury the ancient city, which is located near Bergama in the Aegean province of Izmir. Eroglu's belief in the site's non-existence, however, has been challenged by archaeologists and the Culture and Tourism Ministry, which describes Allianoi on its website as an ancient site that was noted for its health center. "Veysel Eroglu is not an archaeologist. What he said is really ridiculous," Assistant Professor Ahmet Yarasi, head of the excavations, said Wednesday.
