Something is Happening in Top Kill Process [LIVE THREAD]
http://www.bp.com/ ^ | 5/26/2010 | Self

Posted on 05/26/2010 1:49:19 PM PDT by Positive

I have been monitoring the live feed of the "Top Kill" apparatus from BP.com and after about three hours there is a definite change of events down there.

For the first couple of hours we could see several views of a very complex device rocking around in clear water.

Now there is gushing of what I presume is the "mud" plumeing.

We may get some incite as to progress soon.

UNLESS, the main gusher isn’t what you are seeing on the live feed.

Surface oil accounts for only 5% of the total oil that has gushed out so far, so if we ALREADY have seen/measured the surface oil in the gulf to be around 12,000 square miles, how many square miles do you think that the oil would cover if all of it were to surface?

Divide .05% into 12,000 and you get 2,400,000 square miles and the closest country that I can get to that 2.4 square miles is Russia at a bit over 2 mil square miles.

Yeah, that’s just some holes or cracks you are looking at the pipe continues on but can’t been seen in the video feed. The length of pipe laying on the gulf floor still has flow through it from the wellhead since it’s still connected hence they did inserted some pipe into it (pipe laying on ocean floor) to pick up some of the oil for recovery but what bypassed the inserted pipe or flows from other damaged areas(?) flows free to the open gulf waters.

If there wasn’t a kink in the pipe at the wellhead (slows the flow), things would probably be much worse.

Well, you are reading the leftist, spelling challenged Guardian, which explains why they did not mention that the dispersant used does NOT [per all lab and field tests to date] mess up the hormonal system of aquatic life, unlike some of the other choices.

From what I have read- which could be inaccurate or I misinterpreted] this dispersant appeared to be the best choice. It is also EPA approved. And was available in sufficient quantity.

Nicotine is highly toxic, too. But most of us avoid large concentrations and manage to live.

A) Was it available in quantity?
B) Is there any question about it effecting the reproductive system of aquatic life.
C) Why would BP choose a worse agent for dispersal purposes? Because they want to exacerbate the problem?

Lastly, this dispersant is made by Exxon or one of it’s subsidiaries.

Tin foil available on Aisle 2.

Divide .05% into 12,000 and you get 2,400,000 square miles and the closest country that I can get to that 2.4 square miles is Russia at a bit over 2 mil square miles.

Let's try that again:
12,000 = 5% of x ... where x = surfaced area of total spill.

Therefore x = 12,000 / 0.05 = 240,000 sq mi ... so you were only off by a factor of 10.

Unfortunately the media is, for the most case, 10x worse than you on their math and who knows what kind of fudge factors BP et al are using. If your numbers have any validity, this puts the potential surfaced oil (as of right now) at somewhere between the area of California (163,696 sq mi) and Texas (268,581 sq mi

“UNLESS, the main gusher isn’t what you are seeing on the live feed.”

I see what you mean. Took a while for Post #220 video link to load for me. An unexplained origin of a plume of oil coming from a fracture in the gulf floor adds to oil slicks spreading faster than the well in question can spill.

Scary stuff if BP’s negligence caused a new oil seep from their damage well to elsewhere on the sea floor.

Megalodon bit the riser tube in half, and dropped it over on the ocean floor.

A giant squid then grabbed the drilling platform, and pulled it under.

They can’t fool me.

Oooookaaaay. If they plug the well and plumes of oil keep flowing elsewhere, you’ll have to come up with a different scenario.

So, if I understood what the two oil people said, then the following is true:

1. the top kill has a low probability of success
2. even if it does succeed, they are stopping a “mouse” leak and ignoring the “elephant” leak
3. there is a huge (the size of MD and one other state I forget) oil plume out in the gulf and BP has treated it with a toxic “dispersant” that will make it sink to the ocean floor where the public won’t see it - it is thick and gooey and god knows what it will do to sea life in that large area
4. there’s a good chance they are putting on a show for the public with this top kill crap
5. they are ignoring advice to get tankers in there and giving a poor excuse as to why they won’t do it

We also know that the Feds aren’t doing a thing about this and the two oil guys think it will take the military to clean up that plume and to assist with stopping the leak.

One can’t help speculate as to what is really going on here. We have a pretty good idea that Obama wants to nationalize the oil industry in America. We have read that he and BP are pretty cozy, despite the “plug the damned hole” remark. If this oil disaster ends up causing complete devastation of the gulf and the gulf states, would that not then allow Obama to make his move on the energy industry “for the good of the people” and because those money grubbing, too-cheap-to-have-adequate-safety-measures corporations can’t be trusted?

Would you consider posting this video as a news item on the side bar in morning prime time so we can get a lot of people to watch it? (by the way - amazing that MSNBC is actually guilty of some real reporting! or maybe its part of BO’s agenda, don’t know)

There are a number of people here who know off shore oil drilling well enough to be able to watch this and give a very useful evaluation of what was said in the video.

That was very informative - thank you for posting it even though I did not like what I learned.

These two MIGHT have something of value to say, but they SOUND like a couple of idiots.
For instance, one says there is a huge plume six miles away. Maybe there is. But he ruins his credibility by trying to say it is coming out of the far end of the RISER, which is only 5,000 feet long!

IF there is another plume, it is coming from some other opening, which MAY, or MAY not have any relationship to this well.

The other one, with his yap about supertankers, apparently is unaware of the next plan, already in place, if the topkill and the junk shot/topkill fail. That is, removing the broken riser and extracting ALL the oil and gas leaking through the BOP, to a specially equipped ship (which ship can transfer oil to other tankers, if necessary).

On the off chance that there actually IS another plume 6 miles away, they need to send a ship and an ROV over to investigate.

Those two guys weren’t sure what was causing the errant plume. BP isn’t exacting reporting on it but is treating it with dispersant. How would it look if a big’ol tanker parks over the plume and lowers an over-sized upside down funnel to collect the slime?

Obama is useless unless you need your Country ruined ASAP. Congress is deciding on much more tax is needed on a barrel of oil to cover cleanup costs in the gulf and BP will walk scott free because they are to big to fail.

BP would never do this to further a left-wing agenda, would they?

GE isn’t involved in any of these schemes either, are they?

It couldn’t possiby go down like this. Not in this country! How dare I!

Nah...just forget I ever mentioned it. It’s just a silly hard-left-one-world-government conspiracy ‘theory’ of mine, that’s all.

Once the well is killed the msm will then abandon any mention of the millions of gallons of oil spilling onto our shores and pretend that O saved the day!

Or is it saved the planet from a mess he inherited from Bush/Cheney.

It’s not the water in the ocean that is the problem.

It’s the oil fouling many many miles of coastline that is the problem.

Fouled fishing areas, boats, air quality. Or do you think benzene and other dangerous particles in the air and on the beaches are insignificant.

You would pretend it’s only oil in the water when it’s oil spilled into our space that is the problem.

BP is using the dispersant that was stored in the area specifically for use in the Gulf.

Evidently their magic wand wasn’t available to start using dispersant that wasn’t available. Only the Won has the magic wand and he’s not sharing.

“There’s that color change again,,,
FWIW : Fox just reported that 100 miles of coast now

is oiled down,,,

Info from Bobby Jindal... That’s 35 miles more that yesterday...”

And that oil will probably be in those wetlands/marshes forever. We can kiss them goodby even if the top kill works.
