There was a a VA Republican named ____ who chickened out in 1988 just like Coats did in 1998. And we got Charles Robb and Evan Bayh.
That scenario happens in House races all the time in OH, CA, PA, and other such liberal states.
Slightly off topic and I might be the only one here.... Plain Township in Stark County Ohio is on the ballot to become a city.
The township works within its budget and no debt. Some dork wants to make it into a huge city to protect his little par 3 golf course from becoming part of a nearby city (via annex or land snatch).
What idiot citizen wants MORE government and HIGHER taxes?!
So far:

The Virginia Republican was Paul Trible, who ran for Governor and lost in the primary not long afterwards.
Great, looks like we’re stuck with Ron Paul Jr. again, who is going to lose to Price, yet again.
All I can say is, there is no way that THIS precinct chairman is going to do diddly to help BJ Lawson get elected. I may not even vote for him, much less hold fundraisers or GOTV for him.
This looks like the Tea party vote is waaaaay overstated. Are people going back to experience counts now after Zero?
Coats is in his 70’s now. I don’t think he’s playing to the DC establishment, anymore.
I wish things hadn’t gotten so bitter there, but that seems to happen any time a Paulite gets into a close contest. BJ fired the first shot when he was completely ungracious to Roche when Roche humbly asked for Lawson’s support last year (calling Roche a “communist” in an e-mail to his supporters).
That seems to be true. :-<
Yep. Another McCainiac RINO! I swear, a blue-dog Dem that supports the 2nd Amendment would be better than that POS Coats!
I feel like the establishment is playing musical chairs with our Senate seat. Coats, ok he’s down in the pols lets put Bayh, ok back to Coats we go!
Those two did an injustice to everyone.
Let’s not forget it.
Exactly. BJ Lawson is an arrogant ****, and frankly doesn’t deserve to win a primary for dogcatcher. Unfortunately, because he can self-finance, he was able to basically buy this election.
On the bright side, however, I can at least thank his supporters for pulling up half of the Roche signs over the past week that I had put out, so that I didn’t have to spend more time pulling them tonight.
I was hoping that Frank Roche would win, I voted for him, but he is second in District 4.
I met a supporter for BJ Lawson today at the poll and I said I wasn’t going to vote for Lawson because he was a Ron Paul supporter. The lady was gone when I came out of the polling place. I don’t know if what I had said caused her to leave or what...
Ah well, the most important thing is taking the general assembly anyhow. Do that and we can unscrew the pooch with these congressional districts.
After the health care vote, the wind went out of the sails of alot of people. They will need to be fired up again for the November elections. But yes, the story tomorrow will be the ineffectiveness of the Tea Parties...
True, and on that end, I am happy that Ryan Hilliard won the GOP primary for the NC-23 senate district. Ryan is a solid constitutional conservative. Whether he can take on Ellie Kinnaird, of course, remains to be seen....
Thanks for the ping. I had not seen the post because of my lack of enthusiasm for the way things went here in Onslow County. We have had a Republican from this Congressional district for over 25 years. The incumbent did not seek re-election in order to run for Clerk of Court. The “Republican” who won the primary is being backed by three of the staunchest supporters of Beverly Perdue in Eastern NC. He will probably win the election, but I have my doubts that he will be as conservative as he has promised to be!
Sodrel came in third in a close 3-way race.
I guess you better take that spotlight on Sodrel off the website Intercept Point. ;d Egg on my face for thinking Sodrel was a primary lock. Guess the voters were sick of him.
Polls had him beating Hill. I hope Todd Young is able to prevail in November.
Too bad Burton and Souder won renomination (though I forget what Burton has done wrong).
And it’s too bad Stutzman didn’t win the Senatorial nomination. But better Coats than the unfunded Hostetler. Hostetler was the first in I believe, while Bayh was still running, so he deserves props for that, but he should left the race.
The media is already spinning the typical low primary turnout as a Tea Party failure, even though the establishment candidate won with a minority of the vote.
Another chicken, Todd Rokita easily won his house primary.
