Last year, I met with a former congressional aide, who said that there were several closeted atheists in Congress. To run for public office in America, it is almost a requirement that people publicly proclaim their religious affiliation, irrespective of whether they believe or not. Would you vote for a self-proclaimed atheist?
No.
The Wright church was about revolutionary politics dressed as religion.
Obama and family do not attend church. Media protects this PR faux paux like they do all things for O. I can’t recall a president that did not attend church.
He is a creature of ego, not faith.
That's not to say this nation does not support an athiest's right to belive as they so choose, but in order to believe that's in and of itself an inalienable right, one must believe that there is a "giver of rights" that transcends individual humans and collective human endeavors.
There are a few conservative atheist FReepers and there’s a big difference between them and the atheists on the left.
Conservative atheists have respect for Christianity, the left hates Christianity and Judaism but loves and respects every other religion just for spite.
Atheists as opposed to muslims?
Yes I would.
Atheists are Americas most despised religious minority. And yet they have shown no propensity towards flying planes into buildings. As a % of the population they seem to be overrepresented in the military and underrepresented in the prison population. And yet the predominant characteristic ascribed to them is lack of morality.
Atheists are unfortunately represented by LOUD Atheists in the media, evangelical Atheists. Ug, if there is a more reprehensible person I don't know of it.
And I agree that it is most likely that 0bama was “fronting” in Wright's church. The children of atheists are very seldom anything other than atheists. His mother was known as an atheist.
Sure, he he is right on the issues.
No I would not vote for an atheist.
Normally your “atheistic” is known as agnostic.
I am accountable for everything I do to God. Since the next world will last a lot longer than this one, the answer would therefore be no.
However, as is also noted upthread, the chances are pretty good that I would not agree with many of an atheist’s policies in any event.
There are plenty of Christians who attain public office who do not vote like conservatives even if they claim to be one. For instance Huckabee, GW Bush, that sally from SC, etc. It seems to me that quite a few “conservative” Christians are only conservatives on social issues the financial issues not so much.
Yes. If a person is committed to uphold the constitution by their words and actions, I would have no issue voting for him/her.
Say what? If he/she held the very same policies that a professed believer you fully supported supported, how could you not agree with the former, but agree with the latter? Are you just choosing to give new meaning to the word ‘policies’?
I would only vote for an evangelical christian. I’d have a hard time voting for a catholic due to their pedophiliac leadership, or a “new world” christian - like Mormons, Jehovahs Witnesses, or Seventh Day Adventists. I know most Southern Baptists would agree with me.
Nope
Any person of intelligence and reason would show respect, if not for it being a positive influence in peoples lives, at least in respect under the principle of freedom of conscience.
Possibly one of the reasons for the ‘selection bias’ for loudmouth atheists being of the worst sort.
BTW, Wright's major in seminary was Islamic Studies...not Christianity.
>>>>I would but he would have to humor me with things like swearing in on a bible etc.
Some may already have done that. I have always wondered whether Woodrow Wilson, Bill Clinton, and JFK had any religious beliefs.
I’d have a hard time voting for someone like you. You lump people together and make assumptions. Thanks for not being a candidate.
Why do people reject that point yet consider themselves Americans?
