Barack Obama opponents urge census boycott......

Conservative opponents of the Obama administration are urging supporters to resist the upcoming US census, saying it asks too many questions and reflects increasing government intrusion into private matters.

The census, held every 10 years since 1790, is becoming a focal point for the growing anti-government movement in the US.

The government will endeavour to count every person living in the US, regardless of legal, immigration or citizenship status. The count, which helps determine political representation and the distribution of hundreds of billions of dollars in government funds, is mandated by the constitution.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, a virulently conservative, anti-Obama Republican from Minnesota, has urged supporters to give only the number of people living in their household, saying nothing more is required by the constitution. Participation in the census is required by law and to refuse, or to falsify information, is punishable by fines that can range from $100 up to $500 (about £60 to £300), although the law is rarely enforced.

That’s the short form: the long form is another matter.

So it is required by law to provide each and every name in said household?
This is the first time I have read that.
Just want to get this correct so I can tell them off with confidence if the need arises.

"Question 13 asks for the person's citizenship."

That was in 2000. They don't want to know now. Because they want to count everybody.

I've done genealogy for decades and so am familiar with the old census records...

Names/ages/sex of members of household - and occupation (not WHERE worked, just occupation.) That's it.

and they won't get one whit more from me - I will remind them that the “”MUST RESPOND” does NOT mean, legally, must ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.

So with those few bare facts - I will have “responded.”

And those old census records are invaluable for searching your family tree. Although sometime hilarious -and not always correct, especially as to spelling. For ex: they have my grandmother, Mable, as “May Belle” - so trust, but verify, if you're doing your genealogy. ;o)

I would suggest a policy of doubling the numbers in your house if you are in a Red county, or halving it if you’re in a Blue. I would not provide any additional information other than numbers (enumeration). If we’re going to mess with the totals, it might as well be in our favor.

The long form is the other thing which I aSSUME THE COMMERCIALS ARE REFERRING TO. I always thought the govt sold the info from that?

I am also researching my family history and while it’s nice to have all that information on the census forms from years ago, I realize that some of the questions are ones that didn’t need to be answered, just as there are questions on the current census forms that we should refuse to answer. All that HAS to be answered are Names of all people residing in the residence and Ages. It’s nice to have parents place of birth, occupations etc. but that information has nothing to do with determining the US citizen population.

No - Names do not have to be supplied to Census takers/forms —

The word ‘Enumeration’ does not equate to Name - it means Number - a count - not name taking...

I guess I don’t mind giving the names of the legal citizens that live at my residence. I’m one of those that think that only US citizens should be counted, no matter if actually stipulated in the authorization for the census or not.

Giving out names has nothing to do with whether one is a legal citizens And counting is a function of NUMBERS - not of names...

One male - one female - Not Josie Jones female...

The Constitution says — ‘Enumerate’ — which means to count to tally in number.

The point is . . . that giving a name means that it can be verified that you are an actual legal citizen of the United States. This is one of those times when the spirit of the law, Constitution should be applied. I do not believe that the founding fathers wanted illegal aliens represented in our government.
