NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon are dead. So are the rockets being designed to take them there that is, if President Barack Obama gets his way.
When the White House releases his budget proposal Monday, there will be no money for the Constellation program that was supposed to return humans to the moon by 2020. The troubled and expensive Ares I rocket that was to replace the space shuttle to ferry humans to space will be gone, along with money for its bigger brother, the Ares V cargo rocket that was to launch the fuel and supplies needed to take humans back to the moon.
There will be no lunar landers, no moon bases, no Constellation program at all.
In their place, according to White House insiders, agency officials, industry executives and congressional sources familiar with Obama's long-awaited plans for the space agency, NASA will look at developing a new "heavy-lift" rocket that one day will take humans and robots to explore beyond low Earth orbit. But that day will be years possibly even a decade or more away.
In the meantime, the White House will direct NASA to concentrate on Earth-science projects principally, researching and monitoring climate change and on a new technology research and development program that will one day make human exploration of asteroids and the inner solar system possible.
There will also be funding for private companies to develop capsules and rockets that can be used as space taxis to take astronauts on fixed-price contracts to and from the International Space Station a major change in the way the agency has done business for the past 50 years...

What question is he going to ax it?
I knew that was coming before I even read the piece........................
Cripes, this idiot wants NASA to jump on board “climate change” because people aren’t buying it now. This guy is unreal. He is running the country into the dirt, and he is thinking he is doing well; a B+? I think it’s time to realize this guy is a Muslim and what his motives truly are.
I have mixed emotions on this one.
NASA has become an ineffective, politics dominated government agency. Funding them is throwing good money after bad.
But, when a nation quits stiving, when it loses it’s dreams, it’s a ticket to 2nd world status. Seems to me, this is one of many signals the American era is coming to an end.
Trillions (we don’t have) for Wall Street/banks, unions and welfare puppies.
No money for real science and all the concurrent inventions and technologies gained as a result........great.
A real forward thinker there.
Given the choice between spending money for NASA to get men back to the moon or spending money for NASA to study climate change, I pick neither.
China will make it back to the moon before the USA.
Obama and the lefties will celebrate that.
Oh joy....
Trading the future for unionized, graft and corruption of forever subsidized high-speed rail.
Ugh
Ad to appear in major Chinese newspapers:
WANTED: Someone with money and vision to assume possession of the former U.S. Mission to the Moon Project. Project comes complete with solid, experienced workforce. Payment of relocation expenses for workforce is requested.
This is exemplary of what many academic supporters of the left have failed to anticipate. Even though leftist candidates express support for science and research, in reality their policies bankrupt government and inevitably they also lead to a significant reduction in available funding for science and research. After they get personally stung by democrat ‘program’ spending and the consequent budget shortfalls, I think it’s likely that a fair number of academics are going to have buyers remorse.
Only if he uses that dialect Crazy Harry discussed will he ax it anything.
Princess Obama is afraid that NASA will discover where he is really from...mmm...mmm...mmm
Dear Leader is just not a “Science Kind of Guy”.
Dear Leader is just not a “Science Kind of Guy”.
The Chinese have a moon program and IIRC they didn’t sign the treaty banning space militarization.
If you don’t think that the Chinese setting up a lunar base is a bad idea, you need to read Heinlein’s ‘The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress’. Once you set up a lunar base, a railgun/linear accelerator is relatively easy to build - and then you have *the entire planet* in orbital bombardment range.
He who controls the high ground controls the battlespace.
Obama learned his Alinsky very well....
in the fourth paragraph of the prologue in Rules for Radicals:
“What sense does it make for men to walk on the moon while other men are waiting on welfare lines, or in Vietnam killing and dying for a corrupt dictatorship in the name of freedom?”
for anyone interested in learning more about Alinsky...and exposing his evil....

BHO is so strategically short-sighted that he’s really dangerous. Enhancing our space technologies and capabilites ought not be negotiable. The Chinese aren’t waiting.
