WASHINGTON -- Senate Democrats are poised to pass a landmark health care bill that could define President Barack Obama's legacy and usher in near-universal medical coverage for the first time in U.S. history.
Ahead lie complex talks with the House to reach final legislation in the new year.
"We stand on the doorstep of history," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat. "We recognize that, but much more importantly, we stand so close to making so many individual lives better."
The vote Thursday on the bill extending health care coverage to some 31 million uninsured Americans brings Obama closer to achieving his top domestic priority. The White House and Congress have now come farther toward the goal of a comprehensive overhaul of the U.S. health care system than any of their predecessors.
But the final step may be the hardest: reconciling the Senate bill with a significantly different version already approved in November by the House of Representatives.

I want to get a 13 star flag and fly that alongside the 50. Most of my neighbors will wonder what it is.
I’ve flown the Gadsden since the takeover. My husband tells me it’s just an easy way for the gestapo to find me.
and Kennedy probably is too.
That is why I also live in Texas.
Bonning was the phoenetic spelling. He’s from Kentucky. Apparently he wished the rest a Merry Christmas and took off for home and Christmas with his family.
TIME FOR REVOLUTION
Good for you! We have a 3’x5’ Old Glory next to the same size DTOM flag mounted on the front of the house. This coming spring (when the ground thaws) I will be putting up a 30’ flagpole.
This is just as bad as the healthcare debacle and nobody much will even notice. Well, except FReepers.
No ... I had to take a break. We've got a rogue government on our hands.
You use the word takeover. That is exactly how it feels. It's unlike other Presidential elections where a democrat took office - this is different. I feel like there is something much more sinister going on behind the scenes. There has never been a lockstep vote out of the Senate on such a game changing bill. Not even one rino was on board. Something is just not right. If it weren't for Free Republic, I'd feel like a stranger in my own country. I have to trust that God will save America. Time to turn off the TV and computer and turn on the oven to bake some cookies. Merry Christmas everyone.
Reid says they are standing on the doorstep of history:
I say he is right- this could very well be a trigger that sets this country into another Civil War.
51 needed.”
I am pretty sure that this stage of the bill needs 60.
Amendments in the future- which they are already planning might only need 51.
Potential irony:
If the Individual Mandate is voided by the USSC and the unamendable/unrepealable section is ruled acceptable by the USSC, we will have a bill that is unsustainable - can’t turn off the benefits and can’t force the people to pay for it.
Ha ha.
And that is why God spoke to Jim Robinson to start FR
thank you.
Amen. Merry Christmas!

“I keep teelling people that about LIEberman. For some reason, they wont believe me.”
3 weeks ago on Beck’s radio show...
Beck: “ What do you think about Lieberman holding out?”
Jim DeMint: “Don’t trust him...he’s just playing games”
DeMint was right. When Lieberman lost the nomination of his party and ran as an Independent he USED conservatives to get elected. Sadly, I am just now understanding that.
