'FOX News Reporting: Do You Know What Textbooks Your Children Are Really Reading?'
Fox News ^ | Sept. 4, 2009 | Fox News

Posted on 09/06/2009 6:23:17 AM PDT by Freedom Dignity n Honor

Host Tucker Carlson, asked experts, teachers, publishers and parents the same question: "Do you know what is inside your children's textbooks?" From kindergarten through college, we found staggering errors and omissions which may be pushing agendas, hidden and otherwise.

We spoke to the author of "The Language Police," education historian Diane Ravitch, who said textbook publishers censor images or words they deem to be controversial in children’s textbooks. She told us that publishers pander to special interest groups, and assemble bias and sensitivity review committees. These committees decide what words to ban or redefine, and even what images are deemed offensive.

And we examined some college textbooks both in print and in digital forms. We found a glaring mistake in an expensive history book written by Alan Brinkley, Provost at New York’s Columbia University.

And in Fairfax County Virginia, questions remain about what textbooks are used in the private Islamic Saudi Academy. The ISA teaches about 1000 students each year pre-K — 12. Questions have been raised about its textbooks at least since 2006.

This summer, Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, ISA’s 1999 valedictorian, was sentenced to life in prison for his role in a 2002 Al Qaeda plot to assassinate President George W. Bush.

The ISA is wholly owned by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and teaches students from textbooks, which according to a report by a Saudi scholar interviewed by FOX News, continues to “propagate an ideology of hate to the unbeliever...

snip

We tracked down two American college professors who were paid by the ISA to review these textbooks. They signed a letter obtained by FOX News that the ISA's 2008-2009 textbooks' do not contain inflammatory material…” One of them sat down for an interview; the other refused.

I seem to be suffering from a bit of “cranial constipation” this morning (no coffee yet). Where is the link to the video on the Fox page?

My youngest is almost 23 yo. Fortunately, we were able to innoculate them and deflect 99.9999% of the brainwashing. We are fortunate that we live in a very conservative place and at one point, in grade school, even part of the Bible was taught.

This was an excellent expose, but it really could have had a whole show in each of the segments. I guess it would have been difficult to make it interesting, though. I would sure like to see more examples of the “new history”. That was the first that I had heard about the two Thanksgivings. Can you imagine if your kid came home and told you that the first Thanksgiving was in April, not November? You wouldn’t know what he was talking about.

"As an entrepreneur, I see a huge market opportunity for affordable America Friendly private eduation in every town in America.

You're right, but that "affordable" word is the big rub. In some states, charter schools are filling that gap.Hee in Colorado, people litterally try to sign their kids up for a waiting list as soon as they're born.

I don’t know enough of Catholic theology or social teaching that I could provide 8-12 years of daily lessons on the Catholic faith like you get in school. That’s why I have paid the tuition to put every kid through Catholic school at least through the 8th grade and have tried to convince the kids to all go Catholic for high school (as it turned out, we ended up splitting the kids between several schools)

That’s why there is a Catholic school system in the first place, to give kids a Catholic education. I myself, I get my communion every week and I do my hour at church but I have forgotten a lot of what I was taught as a kid and in no way would I be qualified to teach my children all the ins and outs of the faith

“Most state education boards choose textbooks for their state instead of letting local or regional school boards do the choosing. Perhaps, that needs to change.”(Freedom Dignity n Honor)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

achilles2000,

It is amazing how many conservatives persist in believing that government schools can be reformed. I have seen the following posted **repeatedly**:

* If only the Department of Education were shut down...
* If only there were local control...
* If only local school boards chose the textbooks...
* If only conservatives would elect better school board members...
* If only the NEA were outlawed...
* If only we had parents that supervised their children...
* If only parents would complain more...
* If only teachers had to get a real degree instead of an education degree...
* If only we had better textbooks and curriculum.
* If only that taught Singapore Math...
* If only they taught phonics...
* If only they got the politics, religion, and culture out of the schools... ( Of course that's impossible!)
* If only schools would teach both sides of the issue...
* If only schools were neutral...( Impossible!)

(I am surely that I have forgotten a few.)

All of these people believe that government schools can be reformed. All of these people fail to realize:

GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS CAN NOT BE REFORMED!!! GOVERENMENT SCHOOLS ARE AND ALWAYS WERE A SOCIALIST PROGRAM. SOCIALISM CAN NOT BE REFORMED!!!!

Regardless of what is taught, government schools teach children that it is OK for the government to extract money from their neighbor ( under police threat) to pay for a service that their parents want for FREE!

Give children a government school object lesson in socialism every day for 13 years or more years and the adult will vote for FDR and his New Deal, and every other socialist program that has existed in the last century and now the 21st century.

( Yes, I am shouting. I am exasperated at how densely stupid conservatives can be. )

This was a great piece of journalism. Many people have no idea how bad our socialized schools are.

We need to do away with government schools and return to a capitalist schooling system.

Well, not to argue with what would work for your own family, but there are plenty of curriculumn out there that could teach your kids the same theology they’d get at Catholic schools, and it’s hard for me to believe they can beat the success rate of homeschoolers at raising kids who stay involved Christians (98% I believe in one recent study)

Personally, based on the “Catholic social teachings” I was exposed to at the Catholic university I attended I’d rather teach the kids their values myself but I hope most Catholic schools don’t have too much social justice nonsense.

If only....indeed.

The Second Fundamental Truth of Government Education:

GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS CANNOT BE REFORMED

Too many “conservatives” want their “free government education cheese”.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

My daughter taught math in a Catholic K-8 school in Texas last year.

EVERY ONE ( caps for emphasis) of the teachers in this Catholic school, and the principal, voted for Obama, and they took every opportunity to show the students that they were **thrilled** to have this half-black, abortion and partial birth supporting, and even “leave born-alives in the sink to die” man as president.

While I support parents who use Catholic schools, they must be very careful that the school is actually teaching the Catholic faith and not the worship of communism.

The cheese in a mouse trap is free, too! :-(

Conservatives just don’t “get it”.

Nothing that the Catholic Church teaches is nonsense. I believe that we are the true church and that all of our teachings are the true teachings of God. The authority that the church teaches with is derived from Jesus himself through Peter.

Here’s what your kids would have needed:

http://www.ignatius.com/Textbooks/Catechism-FaithAndLife.aspx

http://www.catholiccompany.com/catholic-catalog/1087/Faith-and-Life-Series/?numonpage=36&aid=117&gclid=CJ2rgMae3ZwCFR4UagodySyIbw

These are beautifully produced, ENTIRELY ORTHODOX, and very colorful Catholic religion textbooks. Worth every penny.

He was trying to say that stuff in the textbooks don't cause terrorism. I forget his exact words, it was about 3-4 a.m.

He started to say something then stopped and said something along the lines of, "For those who watch Foxnews, I'll need to rephrase it," then he said the above.

The elitism poured out of his pores. IMO, he and his attitude were nasty and vile.

Teachers are liberal.....what’s new? The program (unless that archdiocese is run differently) is determined from the archdiocesean level and filtered down. The schools have choices of which textbooks to use but that’s about it.

I have found that our local Catholic schools do a great job of teaching our kids the way they need to be taught.

Marxist, communist, fascist, islamist...all bad and all relatively closely related. Those Muslims soaked up the Nazi fascism very well.

Have you noticed that the arguments for keeping our socialized schooling system are the same arguments people use to support socializing medicine?

Frequently it is people who don’t buy those arguments when they are used to support social medicine using those arguments to support keeping socialized schooling.
