Oh dear, I said that before I saw your post about ice cream! Wanted to let you know that so you don’t think I was being rude.
To: Fred Nerks
Yes, but still . . .
The report of births would have come in (by either mail or messenger) from Vital Statistics, typed neatly on whatever form they used. Keep in mind that everything was still done by typewriter, with carbon paper, back then.
Being that this report of births probably ran every week, there was likely a “hole” waiting for it. Newsroom would likely not have re-typed it, but rather it would have gone straight to the copy desk where editors would have just marked it up (formatted, type size, page and column where it goes, etc.) in pencil and sent that same piece of paper to the backshop where the linotype operators would have set it in type.
In other words, the whole thing was probably on a single sheet of paper that didn’t pass through many hands. It would have taken some serious jiggering to change it.
Been there, done that. I’m speaking from experience.
It would have taken a serious conspiracy to get Barry O in the paper in that way, I doubt it could have been done, and I don’t think it would have been worth the effort.
If there was any fraud involved in 1961, it probably involved whoever typed the weekly report at the Vital Statistics office.
But the bigger question is whether that newspaper notice actually every ran or not.

With the right search engine and codes, we can see how the name has been reinvented from his first political office and now (interesting how Google does not show many of these articles ... there's dozens more ...):
The Collegiate Scholar Times Morning Edition February 6, 2004
Candidates Spend Saturday Preparing a Strategy
Democratic and Republican candidates in the Illinois Senate race prepared campaign strategies last week, and reporters from the Collegiate Scholar Times were there to capture all the action. In the picture to the left Democratic Candidate Barak Obama is hard at work producing a campaign message. The Obama campaign released a three point strategy on the economy, the community and education. Touting Obama as a candidate who is experienced in life and law, they promised to say no to the Bush tax cuts, to raise the minimum wage, to meet the needs of all communities, and to protect education for all income levels. The photo to the right shows the Jack Ryan campaign hard at work developing a strategy for the Republican candidate. Claiming that Jack Ryan is a new leader for a better Illinois this campaign also proposed a three point strategy. They point to Ryan's position as a political outside, the claim he will protect equal opportunity in education and employment and they promise to return your tax money to your pocket.
On Saturday February 7th, the candidates will make their first speeches of the campaign. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, September 7, 2004 Senatorial candidate Barak Obama told a Galesburg, Illinois crowd that reversing the trend of sending Americas high paying jobs starts right here, right now, with us. Local 2063 Hosts Jobs Rally
Hundreds of soon-to-be-furloughed Maytag workers, their families and supporters gathered over the Labor Day weekend to protest the impending shutdown of Maytag's Galesburg facility on Sept. 16. More than 1,600 factory jobs will disappear and thousands more in the surrounding area will vanish after Maytag completes its planned move to Reynosa, Mexico. Illinois Senate candidate Barak Obama, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Galesburg Mayor Bob Sheehan and Knox County States Attorney Paul Mangieri joined IP Tom Buffenbarger and local union members calling for an end to the overseas exodus of high value U.S. manufacturing jobs.

What would be BO’s motive/reason for changing his name from “Barak” to “Barack” after 2004, and even changing it in newer editions of his books??
To: Jedidah
However, the papers almost certainly have bound copies of old editions. I dont know if these would be accessible to the public. They are for a fee directly from the newspaper. You can get the phone number online. Most newspapers have an archive department and if they don't, the local university or private historical museums might. They will fax and/or scan the archived page directly to you. Tell them you're doing research for a family tree or doing a puff piece on the best president of the last 100 years, Barack Obama (but only on an empty stomach - barf).
Depending on the source, especially if I had direct access, I might trust a copy of a microfilm tucked away in some dark, forgotten university vs. asking for the newspaper staff to send me a copy of the paper. Less room for tampering, and you can search better than they can if they don't know exactly what you're looking for. |

As we know, Ann has many, many aliases. So does Obama Jr. We "know" the spelling of his name in his parent's 1964 divorce is Barack. As Fred Nerks suggests, Obama seems to have come back from Africa in the early 80s using Barak. Perhaps it's because his father spelled his name that way too when he first arrived in Hawaii in 1959.
Barak Obama (center) and friends at a party given by Arnie and Suzie Nachmanoff, in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in the early 1960's
He went to Kenya to explore his roots in the early 80s. It seems that he "informally" used the spelling Barak vs Barack changed his name after he came back, at least in Chicago and with certain groups.
One has to wonder if the date of 08-19-96 on his Illinois driver's license record, nearly 4 years after he completed school at Harvard and was married by Rev. Wright in October 1992, covers up someone who briefly used Barak from circa 1982 to the early 1990s:

Barry, Barack...
To: thecodont
Lots of references to
Barak campaigning for items dated 2006 and earlier ...
Barak breaks the 20% rule. Superstitious about the 20% rule, I said nothing about my friend, Barak Obama, who has won (with a healthy 60% majority) the Democratic nomination for Senate in Illinois. Barak was an adjunct at the University of Chicago while I was teaching there, and then just as I left, became a regular professor. He is an astonishingly decent and bright forty-something star. Siva points to a great piece about the race. And keep your eyes on 2012: when he will no longer be known as the 5th whatever, but will become the 3d and 1st in one year. (Consider it the Lessig Sunday Puzzle). [Lessig Blog] My father is a Chicago politician and gave me in the inside scoop on this election. The old school Chicago Democratic party is still just as strong as it ever was concerning internal, local stuff. But it's totally losing it's edge and control over statewide or national stuff. They ran an old line cronnie who got hsi ass kicked by Barak. Congrats to Barak.
Im not sure what you mean by 3d, but I assume 1st is a reference to the first black President. I think Obama would make an excellent President, but I dont think it likely that someone whos name rhymes with Iraq Osama is likely to carry many more states than Illinois. Obama is very popular here in Illinois right now, but it may be prohibitively difficult to make a connection in the other 49. Incidentally, I have heard at least two other commentators say they expect Obama to be President one day. Anyone who particularly wants to see a President Obama one day should probably start dropping his name in their writings now, and not stop stop until hes elected. (Which, of course, some have begun to do.

I find NO reference of Obama Jr using the spelling "Barak" until AFTER his trip to Kenya in the early
80s, which includes his first discoveries of his father, Barak Sr, pictured here in 1959 before meeting Ann:Of course, we have a different name used by Obama Jr after his mother married Lolo Soetoro, circa 1966:
Which differs yet again after Dec 1971, when his mom dumped him on the grandparents in Hawaii:
Obama Jr seems to have used "Barak", after visiting Kenya when meeting Barak Sr on his discovery tour, nearly only with black audiences. He appears to have DROPPED the usage of that spelling when his presidential campaign started rolling in 2005. An FOIA check (or diligence by a group of Freepers) might determine if he used "Barak" on legal forms (drivers licenses, state income tax, vehicle registration, etc) while in: -- California (Occidental) -- New York (Columbia) -- Massachusetts (Harvard) -- Illinois (before running for office first in 1996) |

I’ve spent the last couple of days looking up random names that have cropped up in this story and I am amazed at how many have some connection to the Communist Party. CPUSA.

BARAKA "In Islam, divine blessing that is normally associated with holy men or women, waliy, either in life or in death.
Baraka can be transferred from one person to another, or from a material item to a person. Common in Islam is baraka that comes from local shrines, but the strongest baraka is in Mecca, and then especially, at the Ka’ba. Pilgrims returning, are carriers of baraka, as well as bringing with them baraka in the shape of items from holy places. One of the more popular baraka-carrying items is water from the well of Zamzam.
The grandfather: Before working as a cook for missionaries in Nairobi, Onyango had travelled widely, enlisting in the British colonial forces and visiting Europe, India, and Zanzibar, where he converted from Roman Catholicism to Islam and took the name Hussein Onyango Obama. WIKI
Hussein Onyango Obama gave his son, Obama Sr, two muslim first names. The muslim names come from islam. Barak is blessing. I first came across that name in that context in a book by the name of ‘The Blue Nile’ written by Alan Moorehead, published in 1962.
Naming a child Barak might be similar to sentiment behind the name of a friend of mine, whose parents gave her the first name of 'Lucky'.
The school Obama Sr attended was anglican:
http://www.eastandard.net/obama/InsidePage.php?id=1143998493&cid=530&;
“Okanda removes a brown card from one of them. “This one belonged to Barack Obama Sr. He joined the school in 1950 and left in 1953,” he explains.
Obama Sr Index No 3422 joined the school with his elder brother, Joseph, who left in 1951 for unexplained reasons.”
No child of a muslim convert would be named Joseph. The muslim equivalent would be Yusuf.
Just as Cat Stevens became Yusuf Islam.
Obama Snr arrives in Hawaii with the names Barack Hussein Obama - knowing that the BARACK is not the intended arabic spelling. After a while, he reverts to the original, as his father intended. Kenya is independant now, anything inherited from the hated english, including the spelling of the name, is discarded. As for obama zero...his reasons for changing his name from one to the other after going to school as Barry...I really don't have any idea. Other than he's a schizophrenic.

Ecentually you are correct. But from a logical point if a hard copy were there I think it would be waved around for al to see. The image on the internet is an image on the internet.

Does that list include David Axelrod whose first job was with a small community communist paper in Chicago? Documented early on this thread:

When you look at the statistics of the demographics, keep in mind that ‘coloureds’ is not referring to the Blacks. The coloureds are an entirely different group that have different facial characteristics, hair type, head structure, and skin tones from what we typically conceptualize as native ‘Blacks’. They do not share a common ancestry with Blacks and I’m unsure of where their race actually originates.
The largest numbers of that population that I have seen are all the way down in Capetown.
Dankie!

I already listed some very specific things that could be done but they have to be done by someone who would be very trustworthy to share the results of their research in an objective way whether the results supported “our” cause or not. We need the facts as they really are, not as we hope or don’t hope they are.
