CPAC Chairman: Palin Not Ready for Presidential Run
Thursday, July 9, 2009 8:27 AM
By: Ronald Kessler
Sarah Palin needs to stop whining about unfair media coverage and get over the fact that some people dont like her, Dave Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, tells Newsmax.
Palin doesnt seem to get that politics is a tough game, says Keene, one of the countrys most astute political observers.
The American Conservative Union, with 1 million members, runs the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington and publishes an annual "Rating of Congress," the gold standard for ideological assessments of members of Congress.
Youve got to recognize that there are people who want you to fail, Keene says. And if you spend your time worrying about them, or whining about what they say, at the very least itll get you off your game, because you ought to be worried about what youre going to do, not about what theyre going to do to you.
Resigning as governor of Alaska only compounded Palins problems, which have been accumulating since the November election, Keene says.
In the period leading up to the resignation, she needed to get over the fact that people didnt like her, Keene says. Get over the fact that she harbored resentment for the McCain people that used her. All of those things are true, but she got more out of it than they did, and she had to begin to move on with what she needed to establish in terms of her own image, to move to the next level. And she delayed doing that.
"Now it becomes more difficult because of the way in which she bailed out on the governorship.
“Now we know why the anti-Palinism. She ruffled their poor little feathers. Screw them. Invite Mitt next time.”
OR....maybe she realized who they were and decided she didn’t have time...I do that a lot...
This reply by SoConPubbie tells an awful lot of the truth in just a few words, so here they are again.
“No, Keene is not correct.
What Keene, and the rest of the middle-of-the-road NON-FIGHTING “conservatives” have either purposefully or ignorantly done is CONFUSE FIGHTING BACK WITH WHINING.
The general public and most all regular voters out there get this. Only the DNC, the Media, RINOS, and the disaffected supporters of moderate and non-fighting GOP presidential candidates don’t get it.
Furthermore, Freepers who take this line are mostly disengenuous supporters of some other potential candidate.
One last thought, If Keene had any constructive criticism for Gov. Palin he would have given it privately. Giving it this way seems that he has some other motive.
"Will" begin "shortly"? You seem to have missed them going on around you already....
Personally I don’t think she will run in 2012. I think her priority right now is to help advance the Conservative movement, and campaign for other Conservatives who are running for the Senate. That is just as or even more important then running for President. If Sarah can be that leader, to bring Conservatism back and help save this country from Marxism, that is a huge accomplishment all by itself
I was being facetious, but what you call "worshipping" I see as passionately supporting.
“But there are millions of Americans who meet that test, I wouldn’t say all of them would get my vote for President.”
Can you name one who meets this much criteria and is a viable political figure? You know, just in case Sarah ends up deciding the whole Republican’t Party can go screw...
She’s plenty tough. I’d like to see you or anyone else in politics take the onslaught that she has taken. The only person in America to get it worse is GWB for eight years, and that was frankly a whole lot less personal than the attacks on Palin.
She did not quit because people don’t like her that is absurd for Keane to say. She didn’t quit because of the heat. She’s been taking it all year. She completed some big projects - namely the pipeline, and stepped aside. I am not convinced it was the right move, but it is her move to make. She has a year and half left on her term, and it was time to either declare for reelection or decline running again. She determined this was the best option. If she does enter the national stage, we will see what she is made of. Keane is off on this criticism, regardless of her future ambitions.
I thought the same thing. I would rather have anyone with her qualifications any day, than a neophyte like obamma. obamma is out of his pay grade!
Who do you think put that message on the standard posting screen?
Depends on who the messenger is, and how much damage he can and will do personally if you let him go.
“One thing turns me off to Palin far more than anything else, and its her supporters on this site. I try not to let them affect my opinion of her, since its not really fair to her, but its hard not to.”
Try rational thought...only twits like Whoopi Goldberg go on their feelings as if it is reality...
I agree that she has been lampooned quite a bit, not only by popular culture, but also by the establishment through a whisper campaign.
I also know she inspires a lot of devotion amongst the base, and will have a role one way or another in politics (if she wants to).
That is the danger inherent in being a reformer.
I’m concerned that even if she does get elected to the Presidency (I know, jumping ahead here) that she will find it difficult to enact her policy initiatives because of her unique situation. She would have to administer on force of personality alone, unless she can build a machine in the next 4 years that permeates not only election channels, but also the political structure. I think she will have a much easier time with the election part of it than with the administration part of it.
It’s all too early to tell. 4 years is a long time. Not even a year ago most people had never even heard of Sarah Palin, except for a devoted few on FR who tapped her as a political superstar. So far, they got the last half of that right—the first part has yet to come to pass.
Valid, perhaps. But that still doesn't mean it was good for her political future, at least not if she wants to run for the Presidency.
But Palin is so far the only Republican with the guts to criticizing Washington and the Obama administration and simultaneously defending conservative principles.
Ridiculous. Mark Sanford, for one, was fighting Obama and his stimulus pretty hard. And ever hear of Tom Coburn, Mike Pence, Paul Ryan, or Jim DeMint? Palin's obviously been a strong voice, but this "Palin or hell" view so many here take, that she's the only true conservative in a wilderness of RINOs and wimps, is both absurd and unproductive.
Exactly, and I quite agree. I look forward to see what Governor Palin will make of her career from here, and she may at some future date get my vote. But not just yet.
“Can anyone tell me that the election in 2008 was anything other than voting for one of two people running from the same party?”
I was with ya until that line. Obama is not a Democrat. No. And John Mccain is a lot of things, but he is not an avowed Marxist.
Thanks for posting that.
Remember, you said that; not anyone who believes, rightfully, that she has been crucified by the press, the democraps, the GOP wimps, and people like you who accuse anyone on her side in this fight of being some kind of mental cripple.
But then everyone has a right to be wrong.
“And the words “you guys” tells me you are not one of us. Newbie.”
Hahahahaha...good catch. Took a bite of slime...
You know where the door is...
