CPAC Chairman: Palin Not Ready for Presidential Run

Thursday, July 9, 2009 8:27 AM

By: Ronald Kessler

Sarah Palin needs to stop whining about unfair media coverage and get over the fact that some people don’t like her, Dave Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, tells Newsmax.

Palin doesn’t seem to get that politics is a tough game, says Keene, one of the country’s most astute political observers.

The American Conservative Union, with 1 million members, runs the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington and publishes an annual "Rating of Congress," the gold standard for ideological assessments of members of Congress.

“You’ve got to recognize that there are people who want you to fail,” Keene says. “And if you spend your time worrying about them, or whining about what they say, at the very least it’ll get you off your game, because you ought to be worried about what you’re going to do, not about what they’re going to do to you.”

Resigning as governor of Alaska only compounded Palin’s problems, which have been accumulating since the November election, Keene says.

“In the period leading up to the resignation, she needed to get over the fact that people didn’t like her,” Keene says. “Get over the fact that she harbored resentment for the McCain people that used her. All of those things are true, but she got more out of it than they did, and she had to begin to move on with what she needed to establish in terms of her own image, to move to the next level. And she delayed doing that.

"Now it becomes more difficult because of the way in which she bailed out on the governorship.”

David Keene, Managing Associate of the Carmen Group Lobbying Firm, and Head of CPAC, Alexandria, VA.

Political contributions in 2008 election cycle:

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 5/1/07 $1,000 Specter, Arlen (R)

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 12/19/07 $800 Specter, Arlen (R)

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 12/19/07 $200 Specter, Arlen (R)

Add to this the fact that this bum also endorsed Romney in December 2007 and you got a guy that has "part of the problem" stamped on his forehead.

DO NOT DONATE TO CPAC!

"You are saying she is NOT a conservative? Or not worthy if having fans?"

Nope. I'm saying there's more to conservatism than being a Sarah fan.

"Who is more accepted by the majority of FReepers?"

Nobody, which is what prompted my previous comment.

I do not understand the driving force behind this stupidity.

In all my years of following politics, this one episode (Sarah's resignation) has PROVEN to me beyond a shadow of doubt that all the 'establishment' insiders are together as one. Makes no difference one iota what party they belong to.

This guy wants her shut down now.

...and he's not alone. The Washington establishment NEEDS her shutdown now. Notice how many references to her lack of intelligence and her need to 'read' more that we've heard?

I truly believe that those are code words being given to her that if she tries to pull this stunt (coming after the 'good ol' boys network) there is going to be hell to pay for her personally. She successfully pulled that off in Alaska and they know that if she's not 'taken out' one way or another she'll nail them too.

She'd better be watching her back 24/7 once out of office. I'd apprciate your take on my comments.

And she delivers RESULTS! Who else can bring in 20,000-30,000 people at short notice?????

The size and enthusiasm of the crowd at the Reagan Library on August 8 will send a message; one way or another. I believe people that can't get tickets will show up on the grounds regardless...

I agree. She’s got a record of getting substantial things done in every office she’s held, and this time—including the gigantic pipeline being on track—seems no exception. I don’t think some Freepers recognize executive ability and an executive track record when it’s right in front of them.

If we can’t criticize our own, how the hell can we improve ourselves?

It depends on what criticism is being leveled. Has the criticism been personal or against Palin's record as Governor? It is the former. I have yet to hear anyone criticize Palin's record as Governor (her pipeline deal, for example).

If you want to stick your head in the sand and say “hey everything is A-OK” you can watch Dems pick more seats and win more elections

Or you can go simply go with the Republican status-quo of playing by the rules while the Dems continue their stranglehold on Washington and our lives.

I live in reality. Reality is Governor Palin, while the victim of vicious attacks, has a lot of work to do.

The fact is that we don't know if Palin is going to run for President in 2012 anyway. That's what makes Keene's article so hilarious. Why don't you just wait until, if she announces, to criticize her?

I expect results, not whining from conservatives

Who's whining? All I'm seeing is a lot of speculation and panic from the establishment when it concerns Palin.

Hey, FR Romneyites and RINOs, check THIS thread...

If the grassroots TEA Party movement could nominate a candidate for president, who would it be?

Ok CPAC is now out.

Sarah made a moral and ethical decision NOT to continue to cost the STATE and people of Alaska millions of dollars in frivolous lawsuits.

CPAC is not a conservative organization of it’s chair is going to take this irresponsible stance.

I live in reality.

Perhaps a better choice of words would have been "you have your opinion and I have mine". "I live in reality" says to me "I am right and you are wrong".

Reality is perception and perception is reality

Some people perceive Sarah Palin is ready to be POTUS, some people perceive she is not. Doesn't mean either side is right or wrong, it just means people view Sarah Palin from vastly different perspectives.

It's too late MadIsh...the MSM/DNC/Hollywood/Academia war room have destroyed too many of us....SP just being the latest.

You will not stop the anger, it is righteous now.

And inevitable after 8 years of watching Republicans refuse to fight.

A conservative gives Governor Palin some constructive criticism.

Sorry that's not constructive criticism. Keene's article is rank speculation based on false premises.

“She confirmed that she will be speaking to CPAC in person,” Keene says. “Then her office said she was going to be there, they were just working out the logistics. Then all of a sudden she couldn’t be there. At the last minute she was going to do a videotape. We don’t usually do that, but we said OK. Then it turned out they couldn’t get the videotape done, they couldn’t figure out how to do it or something. And so she just didn’t come. Now that was our instance, and it also happened to a number of other groups.”

Now we know why the anti-Palinism. She ruffled their poor little feathers. Screw them. Invite Mitt next time.

Sarah Palin pushes a lot of conservative hot buttons. Emotionally and culturally she is in tune with a lot of people on FR.

Including me. I do like her a lot.

But there are millions of Americans who meet that test, I wouldn't say all of them would get my vote for President.

Sarah is comparable to Ronald Reagan in the early '50s. Reagan at that time had a gut-level conservatism, but it was only after he spent fifteen years thinking, and talking, and writing, that he really had the consistent and well grounded conservative world view that made him the great President he was.

I'd be delighted to see Sarah - or anyone else - head down that path.

CPAC’s advice is intended to put Sarah in a no-win position. Who needs it?

The republican party establishment is unmasked. Its purpose is to attract conservative voter loyalty, while ensuring no one of substance or charisma makes it to the national ticket.

Time for a third party. Whichever party Sarah runs on.

-- Those conservatives who support CPAC and attend the yearly event? They're Palin's base, you moron. --

ROTFL. Quite true. None of the "constructive"/"negative" comments and speculation benefit the missions of destruction of the press or the Democrats.

Why not just "too early to tell," and "the people will decide"? Oh, and he could amplify the policy positions where CPAC and Palin are in 100% agreement.

It's almost as though he wants distance between Palin and CPAC.
