NPR has learned that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire at the end of the court's current term.

Yo Theodore—Americans don’t even understand the essence of the Constitution. And that is that our “inalienable right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” comes from God—not the bunch of power hungray thieves we robotically elect year after year.

I can seriously see him picking one to “give our muslim citizens a voice” and “include ALL religious traditions” etc. I haven’t found a list of federal judges who are muslims yet, but I’m sure there are some. If he could find a female muslim judge, that would give him cover with any Dems who might be concerned about intolerance - if she’s female, she must be progressive, right?

Yep, we can only hope he’ll be voted out but even if he is, will he leave?

That, and this announcement of retirement, makes me wonder if there are skeletons in his closet. As some have said here, he leaned conservative, it appears, till the Clinton years. Was he being blackmailed? Is this retirement (he doesn’t seem that, that old) part of it?

Is this the Judge who violated the right of ownership of private property? I’m thinking he’s the one a group formed in response to in order to get his property confiscated for the common good—sort of a turn about fair play deal? I can’t remember the exact name of the law.

I’ve consistently thought and stated (not on this site) that things are going to have to get beyond insufferable for a majority of Americans before a true change will happen. You can argue the tea parties are a sign of this, and I hope you are right.

But I honestly think we are a lazy spoiled nation that only pays attention to its own creature comforts. In my honest opinion, its going to have to get a hell of a lot worse before this nation will turn off their X-box games, their I-pods, or get off the couch to change course. It’s easy to suck down the spoon fed propaganda from the media and the White House where they are told what they want to hear. And the Dems know this. That and the educational system are they best weapons.

I wonder if his replacement can be delayed for 3 1/2 years until Obama is voted out of office (or he so ticks off the American people they charge the whitehouse with pitchforks and torches).

The GOP USED to have the ability to filibuster. If Smaley wins his seat and with Spectacle gone over to the dark side, even this is now impossible. The GOP should be out playing golf - why even show up?

There’s no reason to believe this megalomaniac sees any need to moderate himself in any way. He can do whatever he wants. He could get Bernardine Dohrn on the court right now if he wanted to.

If you look at his first term cabinet appointments with moderates, corporate types and Republicans like LaHood at Transportation and Bob Gates at Defense predominating, you’ll see that there is political method to Obama’s first term madness. A possible second term is where the far leftists would come to the fore.
The first term political strategy is to divide and conquer the Republican Party by siphoning off moderates and RINOs (Specter)and to keep the politics reasonably close to the center of the spectrum in order to get reelected. Then as a lame duck, he would go for borke as a leftist.
