The Obamas to eat what they grow

The Obama family plan to eat what they grow in the White House in the future

US First Lady Michelle Obama is set to break the ground for an organic garden on a patch of the south lawn to grow produce for the White House kitchen.

Local primary school pupils will help her with the planting and harvesting of the vegetables, herbs and salad crops.

Promoting healthy eating for American families has become a part of the first lady's agenda.

She has promised her whole family will be getting involved, and even President Barack Obama will help with weeding. Mrs Obama hopes that inspiring children will help spread the healthy eating message to others.

"My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities," she said in an interview in her East Wing office.

Is she going to get a plot of land ready to plant in, or is she going to start from scratch and do the digging and prep work herself? The pics show her raking a marked off area, but who is going to do the plowing and fertilizing to ready the earth? ? Just putting seed in that square plot ain’t gonna yield much.

I’m sure O will love to weed. Anything that will keep him from doing work in the Oval Office. Wait -— maybe I’d rather have him in the garden than doing the ‘work of the people’!

Her comments sounded as though she had little gardening experience.....they were far too Disneylandish to make me believe that she had a clue about gardening.
I believe it is a good thing for all kids to learn about gardening. When my husband takes kids to our garden too many of them are shocked to learn that potatoes grow underground or that asparagus and grapes aren't ripe at the same time. It is also, as you said, a lot of work, day after day. And when the tomatoes or peas or beans ripen, there is a small window of time to can or freeze them.

I hope someone has informed Michelle where George would step out to pee before bed. And it would be a good idea to check where Andy Jackson used to dump the cahmber pot out the window, beefore planting lettuce for the children to enjoy. Bwahahahaha ... we won’t go into Clevelands favorite shrubs for relieving himself. The shrubs have long ago been dug up and removed when they browned out.

Do the Obamas have a backyard garden in Chicago?

Oh absolutely, it actually was a very expensive lot adjacent to their house that a very good friend of theirs paid for...They were well known here in Chi for their gardening talents...right!!

Good grief...the article I read the other day said that the staff will tend the garden. Now it’s the Obama family and school children? Even BO will help with the weeding???

I wonder if she’s going to give lessons on canning?

Oh, and are they vegetarians or will they have pigs, chickens, cows, etc?

Will they have a scarecrow to keep the birds away?

So that Wagu beef is going to graze on the lawn too?

I have news for you Zero. You don’t have enough grass to support a herd.

"The pics show her raking a marked off area, but who is going to do the plowing and fertilizing ..."

Just saw a video clip of the garden operation. It looked like about 20 people poking around at the ground and not a one of them knowing what the hell they were doing.

I am sure the night crew will come in with a tiller when the cameras are gone and voilà the garden will be planted and all the plants will be laden with abundant veggies!

No, she'll just go out and stand in the garden.

“Promoting healthy eating for American families has become a part of the first lady’s agenda.”

Wow. I can think of about 100 other ‘agenda items’ that need to come BEFORE a White House garden...and you KNOW I love to grow food!

However...since WE THE PEOPLE, OWN that land, I guess we can all show up for a ripe bushel of tomatoes come July?

All smoke & mirrors, those two. *SPIT*

This whole episode reminds me of what happened on AF bases in 1974-1975. Blacks clamored for Soul Food to be offered in the commissaries throughout the USAF bases. So to comply, the commissary put an entire frozen line of black eyed peas, red beans, turnip greens, collard greens, fatback, chitterlings, bacon, and many other country fare items. It sat there for a year and the only ones buying the food were us poor white folks from the country. Finally, the commissary managers had to rethink their stocking for Soul food items. Its all show for the race of victims.

It is so easy for a woman who lives as a Queen is lecturing Americans to eat what you grow. In many areas it would cost much more than buying from the farmer’s market.
We always have a garden but would not have if we were on a tight budget.

4 pickup truck loads of compost a year to break up the clay
at 15.00 a truck load.

tomato plants (we don’t have a long enough growing season for seeds) are 2.98 -5.00 a piece.
other seeds 2.00 a pack
Increase in water bill (it is very dry here) is 20.00 per month.
Then there is bug spray, replanting if we get a really late frost and fertilizer.

We would have to spend alot on vegetables to make it worth doing it to save the environment or save money. That lady is in lala land.

On the other hand, we live in an area that has some of the best corn you will ever taste. Between Sakata farms and Olathe sweet corn, we eat our fill each summer. At 3.00 a dozen you can’t beat that. We have farmer’s markets with anything and everything you would want.

We are down to tomato plants, I can’t quite give it up, we have the luxury of growing our own because that is what it is here.

I was thinking the same thing. This is kind of neat, my family all have gardens, it is the best way to get fresh veggies and much cheaper than the grocery store.

Even that picture of her in post # 57 with the rake, shows a pile of little girls just standing together talking. Note the kid with the brand new pitch fork also posing. Won’t get much work done that way.
