Surtsey still surprises

After the island of Surtsey was born of a huge undersea volcanic eruption off Iceland in 1963,1 geologists were astonished at what they found.

As one wrote: ‘On Surtsey, only a few months sufficed for a landscape to be created which was so varied and mature that it was almost beyond belief.’2

There were wide sandy beaches, gravel banks, impressive cliffs, soft undulating land, faultscarps, gullies and channels and ‘boulders worn by the surf (see picture left), some of which were almost round, on an abrasion platform cut into the cliff.’2 And all of this despite the ‘extreme youth’3 of the island!

The geologists’ surprise is understandable, given the modern thinking that young Surtsey’s ‘varied and mature’ features ought to have needed long periods of time—millions of years—to form....

It’s common sense. Surtsey is an island off the coast of Iceland formed by volcanic activity. Does the origin of every corner of every landmass on earth fit that description? No! We have long term erosion and sedimentation, for example. Therefore, credible scientists cannot extrapolate Surtsey’s genesis to that of the entire earth.

Can you explain how the oceans didn’t boil away from the released energy of moving that much tectonic plate that far in such a short time or the colossal vulcanism that would accompany such an event or how the birds managed to survive in such an environment, let alone Noah and his ship.

I'll grant you that! It is definitely interesting, as all of science is. I took her statement (and lets be honest, Eugenie is certainly capable of saying stupid things) to mean that all of science fits together in a sort of tapestry. Evolution makes no sense if hundreds of years of geology was uprooted by this story and suddenly a young earth model was accepted science. Astronomy and therefore physics as we understand them make no sense if the new geologic model upturned our billions years old earth model and now evolution and therefore the whole of biology (and in turn, chemistry and genetics) would make no sense.

Which is essentially what YECs are strangely attempting to do.

Your words are in direct contradiction of God's word. - Exodus plainly states that Torah was written on stone by the finger of YHWH. Moses merely carried the stone down the mountain.

There is much in the Bible that is not literal history.

Genesis, however, is.

In addition to what editor-surveyor wrote, Got made sure that, through those who recorded his Inspired word, the meaning of His Word was not lost.

Had an all powerful all knowing God allowed his Inspired Word to be corrupted to the point of deceiving people, it would have been because he intended to do so.
