Surtsey still surprises
by David Catchpoole
After the island of Surtsey was born of a huge undersea volcanic eruption off Iceland in 1963,1 geologists were astonished at what they found.
As one wrote: On Surtsey, only a few months sufficed for a landscape to be created which was so varied and mature that it was almost beyond belief.2
There were wide sandy beaches, gravel banks, impressive cliffs, soft undulating land, faultscarps, gullies and channels and boulders worn by the surf (see picture left), some of which were almost round, on an abrasion platform cut into the cliff.2 And all of this despite the extreme youth3 of the island!
The geologists surprise is understandable, given the modern thinking that young Surtseys varied and mature features ought to have needed long periods of timemillions of yearsto form....

It’s common sense. Surtsey is an island off the coast of Iceland formed by volcanic activity. Does the origin of every corner of every landmass on earth fit that description? No! We have long term erosion and sedimentation, for example. Therefore, credible scientists cannot extrapolate Surtsey’s genesis to that of the entire earth.

I took her meaning as she stated it, no more, no less. But since it doesn’t comport well with: “ Evolution is biology.”, well, “it’s interesting”.
Don’t blame me for your “abysmal understanding” of evolution.

It moved the continents in about a year if I remember right. Can you explain how the oceans didn’t boil away from the released energy of moving that much tectonic plate that far in such a short time or the colossal vulcanism that would accompany such an event or how the birds managed to survive in such an environment, let alone Noah and his ship.

Scientists and scholars supportive of intelligent design do not describe themselves as "intelligent design creationists." Misdirection. The actual term they use is "cdesign proponentsists"

No, your moronic post took care of that all by itself.Your posting skills are improving. Now you are attacking my post instead of making a personal attack on me! JR is proud of you.

If he said day and Moses misunderstood, and God declined to correct him, God would have in essence, lied. I don't think God spoke to Moses in English.
To: ROLF of the HILL COUNTRY
Sure, Moses himself discusses where he got his information. 1200 pages is more my estimate based on comparable information used by the Hindus and others to develop their own ancient scriptures.

I'll grant you that! It is definitely interesting, as all of science is. I took her statement (and lets be honest, Eugenie is certainly capable of saying stupid things) to mean that all of science fits together in a sort of tapestry. Evolution makes no sense if hundreds of years of geology was uprooted by this story and suddenly a young earth model was accepted science. Astronomy and therefore physics as we understand them make no sense if the new geologic model upturned our billions years old earth model and now evolution and therefore the whole of biology (and in turn, chemistry and genetics) would make no sense.
Which is essentially what YECs are strangely attempting to do.

My question to you was: What makes you think 1200 pages of the Genesis story are missing? Do you quote another source, or is it conjecture on your part?
To: Buck W.
"
Youre gone." You've been 'gone' for a long time.

"

"
The Bible was written by MEN, as they were divinely INSPIRED through revelation; THEY DID NOT TAKE DICTATION FROM GOD ALMIGHTY!" Your words are in direct contradiction of God's word. - Exodus plainly states that Torah was written on stone by the finger of YHWH. Moses merely carried the stone down the mountain.

You obviously are a Biblical literalist; [excerpt]
I don't think the Psalms are
literal.
There is much in the Bible that is not
literal history.
Genesis, however, is.
The Bible was written by MEN, as they were divinely INSPIRED through revelation; [excerpt]
In addition to what editor-surveyor wrote, Got made sure that, through those who recorded his Inspired word, the
meaning of His Word was not lost.
Had an all powerful all knowing God allowed his Inspired Word to be corrupted to the point of deceiving people, it would have been because he
intended to do so.
God does not have any
Ooops! I didn't know that was gonna happen! moments.
God is outside of time, of course, but even the Bible gives allusions to how He views time: ..a thousand years are but a day to the Lord. [excerpt]
And
who is the literalist?
2nd Peter 3:8: But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
Psalms 90:4: For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.
The Bible is FULL of metaphorical teachings, and if you only see the metaphor, then you're missing the real message!!! [excerpt]
Like the ones above. (No, its not saying that 1,000 years = 1 day)
You insist on the letter of the words in the Bible, but completely miss the meaning. [excerpt]
Well, when it says,
Thou shalt not kill, how am I missing the meaning?
What is written literally needs to be taken literally.
You become one of those Christ said his teachings were meant to confound. [excerpt]
Then why am I not confounded by it?
I find the meaning conveyed in the Hebrew and Greek to be very understandable.

Haha, oh yeah. While I certainly fully support my friends over there, you'll also note I haven't posted there but for one week in October 2006 - after Free Republic purged almost every member with a scientific background. You "caught" me.
