The FDA has effectively banned a naturally-occurring form of vitamin B6 called pyridoxamine by declaring it to be a drug, reports the American Association for Health Freedom. Responding to a petition filed by a drug company, the FDA declared pyridoxamine to be "a new drug."
Now, any nutritional supplements containing pyridoxamine will be considered adulterated and illegal by the FDA, which may raid vitamin companies and seize such products. See the history of FDA raids on vitamin companies here: http://www.naturalnews.com/021791.html
Pyridoxamine occurs naturally in fish, chicken and other foods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B6), putting the FDA in the strange position of banning a substance from dietary supplements even though it is already present in the food supply.

There has been an effort to bring all vitamins under the FDAs control. Its been a bone of contention for at least twenty years that I know of. They already are. This was in response to a drug company petition, to reclassify one form.

Thank the lawyers.
The drug company must file this, else they lose their protection. The FDA must rule on it, and this is a consistent ruling.
It’s all the insanity of the twisted mess we’ve created in our legislation, regulations, and litigation.

I would be so happy if companies just said they weren’t going to comply because the FDA is unconstitutional and therefore nothing it says is valid. It’ll never happen, but I can dream.

I'm pretty sure that there was a tainted batch that got into the country and there were a large number of permanent disability cases and 30+ deaths.
At the time there was a lot of speculation that the genetically engineered bacteria that the company used to create it caused the problems but I think that was eventually dismissed.
In any event while whatever the production problems was it was fixed but the FDA banned it as did a lot of countries. They removed the restriction in 2001 but I think they still have a warning that large doses might result in the inability to break histamines (which a lot of people think was the cause of the initial problems).

Vitamin B6 is effective therapy for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, especially prolonged and excessive vomiting.
Vitamin B6 is effective for selectively lowering serum levels of triglycerides, and often utilized in therapuetic dosage.
List of therapuetic uses for B6 found at MayoClinic.com
IMO, it's a drug company move.
