President Barack Obama has brought a more relaxed style to the White House, according to Sheryl Gay Stolberg of the New York Times, among other things going suit coat-less in the Oval Office and allowing others to do the same.
Obama critics will probably hold this against him and mark him down as disrespecting the presidency.
But the Oval Office is an office after all, even if it is the world's most famous one. At bottom, it is a work space albeit it holds an almost sacred place in the hearts of many Americans.
Most Americans probably won't begrudge Obama the comfort of being able to doff his suit coat in the Oval. They've got bigger worries these days.
Indeed, they'll likely accept the image of him in his shirtsleeves as evidence of an executive working hard to solve the nation's problems.
One of the story's most memorable anecdotes is actually not about Obama but former President George Bush and it was told by Dan Bartlet who was a senior adviser to Obama's predecessor.

Military EOD teams are tasked for direct support to USSS. I have been assigned to details from Fall Down Ford to the Clintonistas off and on during my career. Democrats are the worst. Course this is a waste of bandwidth as we already know that..... They are just nasty, folks that I wouldn’t let around my own family or home due their very nature.
I heard that it goes back to prison attire (being handed whatever was NEAR your size).
I just found a reference on the White House Museum website referring to Eisenhower trashing the floor of the Oval Office by walking around in his golf spikes.
Lack of good upbringing, or maybe just lack of respect for the office. He’ll be in his Arab robes soon enough.
I’m sure Lincoln wouldn’t mind at all.
Times were different then. That’s the way Dad’s dressed for dinner when they came home from work. My folks were all about saving electricity — until they were robbed. The police told them to forget about keeping lights turned off while away. There were so many burglaries during that time, the police finally told everyone to keep all their lights on. It was all about being good citizens no matter who was in office. If the President asked, the Nation complied. Once taken, twice shy, I guess.
Now those slacks ARE offensive . . . .
Those presidents were of a lot more solid stock than some of them today are. I can understand why folks followed along back then, a lot easier than they do today.
Naw, I predict track suits will be next.
A slob is always a slob, a thug is always a thug, and a Muslim is always a Muslim.
Barack is nothing more than a disrespectful inexperienced Kenyan Socialist.
And that is exactly what Barack is all about!
Relaxed Style??? It is because he likes to keep HIS thermostat at 78 degrees!!! Those men in suits are just happy not to sweat too much. Heat for thee but not for thee is Obama’s motto. You homies in Chicago can freeze your butts off, you selfish pigs. But the messiah stays nice and toasty inside the Oval Office
Clinton got BJs in the oval office so I can’t get overly excited about Obama going without a coat.
“among other things going suit coat-less in the Oval Office and allowing others to do the same.”
Reagan always wore a suit in the oval office out of respect for the historical importance of his status, and the oval office. It showed a certainly humility that is lacking in this president. It’s not his oval office, it’s ours.
Hey, the dog’s not in a suit :-)
