Robbery suspect shot and killed by intended victim
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | January 15, 2009 | MIKE MORRIS

A robbery suspect was shot six times and killed by his intended victim outside an East Atlanta Village bar Wednesday night, police said.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight in the 1200 block of Glenwood Avenue in southeast Atlanta, about two miles from the scene of last week’s high-profile killing of a bar worker near Grant Park.

In the Wednesday incident, a man and woman had just left the Graveyard Tavern and were sitting inside their car waiting for the vehicle to warm up when a man approached with a gun and demanded money, Atlanta police Sgt. Lisa Keyes told WAGA-TV.

“At that time, the male inside the vehicle pulled his own weapon and shot [the] suspect six times,” Keyes said. The unidentified suspect died at the scene.

Police were treating it as a case of self-defense.

Last week, Grant Park bartender John Henderson was shot and killed during an armed robbery at Standard Food & Spirits on Memorial Drive. His death prompted area residents to voice concern about rising crime.

I worry that some day this common-sense fairness on the part of the police will evaporate away into a haze of European-style "justice", in which the only real criminals are citizens defending their own lives.

I guess we’ll put him down as a “no”, then.

I wonder if it was 6 for 6 from a revolver, or six of 15 from a semi ...

The good news is he was effective.

Officer: Why did you need to shoot him six times?

Would be victim: Because he was armed as well and kept trying to get up.

Officer: Why did you need to shoot him six times?

"Because politely telling him not to do it was just not working."

Jack Bauer off duty?

I wonder if all the patrons of the Graveyard Tavern pack heat?

The shooter should get a Good Citizen award.

“I wonder if all the patrons of the Graveyard Tavern pack heat?”

Hopefully that’s what the bad guys are thinking too.

Yepper - my wife carries an old Browning Belgique, 9-shot semi. I told he,r if she ever has to shoot someone, to follow the body mass down and keep squeezing until it says “click”, then change mags before further assessing the situation. The theory being that if someone is being bad enough to rate shooting, they rate meeting their Maker for judgment.

It helps when you keep your weapon within reach of your wallet.

It was probably six from a semi-automatic. The intended victims were seated inside their car, making it difficult to pivot or turn; the driver would have had to extend his right hand across his chest to fire. Given fear of imminent danger, getting off six rounds pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop, would be much easier with a Glock than a revolver.

Anyway, they’re safe and that’s good. Someone wrote,

“Why six times?” “Because he was still armed and kept trying to get up.”

;^)

Sadly, I see this coming on the horizon. Hope I am wrong.

That plus the "Dead Eye Dick" trophy!

Speaking as a MA resident, I am always pleasantly surprised by stories such as this one -- it's easy for me to forget that much of the rest of the country still retains its sanity.

Here is MA, the entire concept of self-defense has gone out the window. If I am threatened, I am allowed to give in or to run away. For me to kill my attacker would be to almost certainly guarantee jail time for moi.

The shooter should get a Good Citizen award.

Maybe that should be a reward instead of an award. If we calculated what the cost of a non-capitol punishment trial and imprisonment for say 10 years would be and gave our hero 10% of it we'd be 'way ahead money wise. It might also encourage other folks to help the police "Take a bite out of crime".
