NEW YORK, (AP) -- MSNBC was the victim of a hoax when it reported that an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing story about former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the network said Wednesday.
David Shuster, an anchor for the cable news network, said on air Monday that Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, had come forth and identified himself as the source of a Fox News Channel story saying Palin had mistakenly believed Africa was a country instead of a continent.
Eisenstadt identifies himself on a blog as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy. Yet neither he nor the institute exist; each is part of a hoax dreamed up by a filmmaker named Eitan Gorlin and his partner, Dan Mirvish, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
The Eisenstadt claim had mistakenly been delivered to Shuster by a producer and was used in a political discussion Monday afternoon, MSNBC said.
"The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air," said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. "We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes."
Gaines told the Times that someone in the network's newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague.

How do you know she hasn't already done that? Her younger sister said that she was a voracious reader growing up. Palin herself has said she read a lot especially items concerning Thatcher and Reagan.
Carl apologized to Greta? What about apologizing to the Governor?!
These second-tier guys at Fox, like Carl and Shemp, gotta go. They can always get McJobs at a Blue State station: "Good evening, I'm Carl Cameron, here's the Vermont news..."
I expected more from Fox. Pathetic
There will be a special place in hell for those people who are so sure that someone else is wrong/evil that they make up wrong/evil stories/viewpoints and ascribe them to the object of their derision.
And there are some who still believe “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me”.
Oh, that's right, they poison the political discourse by spreading unsubstantiated rumors, and are too easily taken in by hoaxters.
Tell me another one.
NY Times and BSNBC both got duped. But why read fiction anyway.
Romney was caught several ways.
Laugh to protect the GOP’s-BackStabber-ROmney all you want.
Won’t work. Romney — and those who protect him—
are now exposed to the rest of America for what they truly are.
An email from a colleague!
Heck, by that logic, I should have already had good luck and won the lottery, my meat should be completely dissolved in Coke and oh yeah, Jesus loves me because I forwarded that email to 10 people!
I received a few emails this morning from some very disgusted people. Their disgust was over the following.
Andrea Mitchell was asked this morning what Sarah Palin could do over the next few years to prepare for a possible run at (president?).
Andrea stated "Learn some geography...."
Andrea Mitchell knows the story is a lie but she is in the hive of deceit who all work together for one of their common goals: To destroy Sarah Palin.
Andrea, how does it feel to know you are an unrepentant, pathetic liar?
I have not heard the Palin dinosaur story lately. I guess they are saving that one for 2012.
Carl Cameron? From now on let this lieing, smirking, pencil necked geek be known as ‘Carl Camera on’.
"The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air," said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. "We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes."
AND from FOX, Carl Cameron, Shep Smith...we heard.....
..still waiting...
pssst...has Cameron been given a time out?
“someone in the network’s newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague”
Who is “someone” and why does he/she still have a job there?

Let’s not forget who broke the story. Fox News.
“how many democrat tv viewers will be repeating this story for decades?”
I overheard someone quoting it a couple of days ago. It’s the kind of lie that liberals love to tell.
Andrea Mitchell is the person who told two different stories regarding whether Valerie Plame’s CIA job was common knowledge. I would wager that NBC’s lawyers worked very hard to keep her off the stand in the Libby trial.
And where has Mcbipartisan been with regard to this despicable behavior on the part of his campaign advisor, Eisenstadt?
I am appalled at the person this once honorable and courageous warrier has become.
The damage will never be undone, IMO. Palin has been “Quayled” for all time. We now know that Quayle himself was set up in the infamous “Potatoe” incident, but the public has never learned the truth of that story and never will. They will never learn that the Palin allegations are a hoax either.
Our house has been “Fox and MSM-Free” for about 2 straight months now. It’s actually a lot less stressful. Plus, we are spending more time playing and reading and watching some of the science/history stuff.
I highly recommend it. I just assume the MSM will be saying nothing worth a grain of salt, and can only promote adoration for Hussein while destroying the characters of anyone who challenges them/him. That’s the sum total of what I am missing and well, I don’t miss it.
Thank you to those who have the stomach to actually watch the MSM liars and report them to the rest of us here. I am truly in your debt.
